Fir or Fur Elise Rock & Rool Style

This recording is a direct result of a topic that Zombre started a few weeks ago regarding sight reading which led me to attempt transposing notation to guitar. I chose a simple version of Fur Elise for Piano and converted the notation to tab. (Enlightening)

After a few weeks of screwing around with this I decided to press record and lay down some tracks. This is what it turned into.

I know my playing is super sloppy and the recording quality is not great but do you think it's a good spin on the tune to play it on guitar this way? I love hearing the classical stuff recorded with heavy guitar like the stuff you hear form Satch and Vai.

I appreciate any comments.

Another beginner question...

Okay, I've gotten fantastic advice so far.
Now, I'm trying to work on the basic C, D, & G chords. How normal is it for fingers to interfere with other strings by muting/buzzing?
Example: C chord
0
1
0
2
3
0
I think I did that right though I get the impression that the open (low) E in optional. Anyway... I have my index finger on 2nd string, first fret (C) but I'm having a hard time keeping it away from strings 1 and/or 3. I do not have particularly large fingers. I was also wondering if the guitar itself can be a factor.
D is a breeze but G it really tough on my wrist/top of my forearm. I know pain will be a factor until I get limber. The finger positioning for G is tough though. And the Gmaj that was mentioned in my previous post... Supposed to bridge all the strings at 3rd fret with index finger. I can't flatten my finger that much!! Haha.
So I would appreciate some constructive criticism/advice. Thanks

I know most of you don't care, but some of you are like me and wonder what happened to someone when they stop posting.

I'm starting my vacation, (at least ONE of my vacations,) today at 10AM mountain time and will be returning on 5/19/08. Not going anywhere. I have a gazebo to build in my front yard, stuff to work on in the studio, spring things to do around the house, etc.

Hopefully, I'll have nearly complete backups for the project with Liz and ibzRG done. I need to lay down some drum parts and a bass line. We'll be looking for a harp player and a sax player, far better than I am, for some fills which may or may not end up in the final mix.

Other than that hope everyone stays safe, rocks on and generally loves the crap out of life.

i recently came into possession of a shecter synyster custom electric guitar, and i am uber stoked cus i always have wanted a guitar.... but now im a little lost (go figure haha). i know i should learn by taking lessons.... but at the time that is not really an option as i am in college and dont have the time to start right now (although i do plan on doing some later). i was wondering if there was a good place to start learning to play some things... i already taught myself how to read tabs for songs.... but i cant really play anything but maybe a riff here and there. are there some good songs i could just start off with learning. or if that is too ambitious to start off with, could i get some suggestions on how to learn more.
thanks.

Ibanez Gio

Hey all, I've been guitar shopping the last few days and finally settled on a great-looking Ibanez Gio I found down at one of my local pawn shops. It's nice and light and very comfortable to hold and play. I'm a total beginner so this is was one of my main concerns. Does anyone know some about them? It produced a good sound although the only thing I didn't like about it is the B (and G string especially) seem to have this quite twangy hum whenever I play. Is there a way to fix it? Overall I'm very happy with my buy, I can't wait to get started. Any info is greatly appreciated.

P.S. Now I've got the guitar... what should I look for in an amp? :) Looking at playing blues music.

Hi everyone. I'm trying to learn guitar. I know I should be learning on an acoustic but all I have at the moment it a Kramer Focus the we had gotten for my g/f's daughter. What I am wondering is this; where is the proper place to start? Learn chords or scales first? I'm seeing that things get pretty complicated with degrees and modes and what not and I'm trying no to let that scare me off! I don't want to be Steve Vai or John Petrucci (though that you be awesome!!!). I'd just like to play songs, maybe improvise some small fills and learn some solo's eventually. Any advice on where to begin?
Thanks

Hi, I'm looking to buy either the Epiphone beginner pack or the Squier beginner pack. I've checked both out on youtube and such, but I can't come to a decision. Really only interested in the "blues" sorta sound right now, which guitar would be better at producing that style of sound? Also quality-wise, which is better? I have heard a few people say the Epiphone one is better because the strings are set up easier for beginners, but the amp in the Squier pack is much, much better. Just my main concerns are creating the sound I want and ease of play. Thanks.

Anyone here live around/in or spent some time in Vancouver, BC? I will be honeymooning there in early June and looking for suggestions on things to check out. So far our agenda includes

1. Vancouver Island (some biking and sightseeing)
2. Eating our weight in sushi
3. Doing a brewery tour
4. Hitting some Korean restaurants (my future wife is Korean)

I will also be looking for a peameal bacon sandwich. Not sure if you have them out there or if peameal bacon is exclusively a Southeast Ontario thing. Growing up in Michigan, I spent a lot of time in Southeast Ontario and now that I live in Chicago I miss peameal bacon *badly*. My last trip to Toronto I couldn't wait to get to the St. Lawrence market and have some fresh off the grill.

i got the whole summer to be my lazy self. so i was thinking about how good on guitar i would be by the time i got back to school in september.
Then my friend told me that she can get us jobs in the summer. and the job is....Guitar Shop!!
im sooo excited. working for the whole summer in a guitar store. its gonna be pretty awsome, and a very good memory too. my 16 year old summer... the owner also told me and my friend that we will be able to get cheaper stuff from there.

these are the things i want to get:
-Electric-Acoustic guitar
-Flying V (dont have a specific Make :P )
-New Amp (again no make :P )
-Guitar Accessories and whatever =D

Robert Fripp

Ok, I've been a huge David Bowie fan for a long time now (since I was about 17), And I'm particularly a fan of the albums Low, Heroes, and Scary Monsters, the common denominator on those albums being some brillian lead work by Robert Fripp. I started studying him a bit and he's one of my favorite guitarists these days, I love king crimson and some of his soundscape stuff as well. I'm mostly wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm trying to get a feel for his style. I've learned some of his soloes and things, but I'm having trouble understanding how to fit it into a theory context. Some of it just seems to be out of tune, so should I just think of that as chromatic work or are there actual scales that I'm just not familiar with that he tends to work in. Keep in mind I have a pretty good handle on the 7 modes and most of the more common scales ie melodic/harmonic/and natural minor, major scales, ect. (I don't however know much about bebop or hungarian type scales). If you have any ideas I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Just bought JCM2000 on ebay...tubes going out? HELP!

i just bought a JCM2000 TSL100 on ebay. not ever having had a single problem purchasing on ebay i wasn't too worried about it. well, luckily i received the amp after spending 3 weeks trying to track the guy down to assure me that he in fact did ship it. when i got it looked great, immaculate condition, so my anger with the guy was starting to subside. well, i plugged it up to test it out and found that on the clean channel i couldn't turn it up past 4 without it sounding distorted. the dirty channels sounded fairly decent, but i'd turn the volume and gain up to 10 and probably could've had a conversation at the same time because the volume was disturbingly quiet. i'm thinking (and hoping) i need to change out the power tubes, and that its not something more serious, but i've honestly never owned a tube amp long enough for the tubes to go out, so i'm not altogether positive. does this sound like it might be the problem? if it is, what tubes would be good enough to sound decent but also not be like, $200/quad or more? are svetlana tubes any good? they are dirt cheap so i'm assuming they're not great.

also, i've researched the process of rebiasing the amp myself after i change out the tubes. it doesn't seem too complicated as long as you're safe about it, and it seems particularly easy to do on a TSL100. is this something a fairly competent person who's not a total retard can handle? i mean, i'm no electrician, but i understand the concept and i've done my homework on it, so i'm not thinking it would be brain surgery or anything. any input would be greatly appreciated.

A few years back I bought a Marshall dsl401 combo tube amp for somewhere around $699-799.
Now I see them selling new for $1199 and used for about what I payed brand new.

Does this make sense to anyone else?

picking help

hi everyone on these forums

my situation is this:

i have been playing guitar for about 3-4 years now, and ive always rested the underside of my forearm and wrist on the body of my guitar (a fender strat). recently ive been trying to increase my speed, learning classic shred. you know, "eruption" and the like. i was have little or no success, so i reasearched on the net to see if my technique was wrong. i discovered on a few sites that it is not recommended to rest any part of your picking hand or arm on the guitar. is this true? if this is the case, am i right in thinking that you have to hover your picking arm over the guitar body without making any contact?

sorry to sound real trivial and like an unintelligent beginner. its just that im self taught, and ive never had someone to correct my "mistake". i guess thats why im here.

many thanks to anyone who can help me. much appreciated

TC G Major or similar product

i'm trying to get some sort of rack effects unit and floor controller and i want to make the most educated decision before i spend the money. i'd like to spend less than 7 or $800 on the whole set up and i'm looking at the TC G Major, but on zzounds and musicianfriend there's a lot of mixed reviews on it. i'd like something that can switch amp channels on top of having a lot of great sounding customizable effects. the g major basically seems like its exactly what i'm looking for at a reasonable price, but the reviews make me nervous. anyone out there own one? if so what has been your experience? anyone have any other recommendations for a better product?

11/32 tuning machines

The neck that I bought from Warmouth was drilled with 11/32 holes for the tuners. It seems that this is a standard for Warmouth. I don't really care for the vintage stuff. I'm trying to get a modern set of Gotoh Mini 510's that fit an 11/32 hole. From what I can see most of them are made for 10mm, or 13/32 holes. I've contacted Stewmac to see if they carry anything like that. I really don't want to drill out the holes, and I don't think this is something I should attempt to do. Has anybody here delt with this type of situation? Do you know if either Gotoh, or Shaller makes modern tuners for these size holes?

Selling Out?

I have heard at lot lately about fans complaining that their favorite bands are selling out, and switching to main stream. I have especially heard alot about Killswitch engage, Slipknot, and In Flames. Supposedly they are all selling out and changing their styles to make more money. Personally i think this is bs. Im all for a band changing its style every now and then, i think its the mark of a truly great band, innovation. Nobody would listen to a band if they always sounded the same. i think people get so caught up in trying to stay cool and hip that they abandon anything once it gets recognition, always trying to stay ahead of the pack. It drives me absolutely nuts when people accuse bands of selling out just because they tried something new, or wanted to make some money for their efforts. Its total B.S. in my opinion. i love a band that can try stuff and mix it up a little, but people these days are all going insane i think.

Evil Sounds

So, I'm a huge metal guy. Lately I have been way in to Black Metal typed stuff, but not so much overboard as any of those swedish bands that wear makeup and talk about being celtic and stuff, I'm more along the lines of The Black Dahlia Murder, and things like that.
Anywho, I'm wondering what I can do to make some of the stuff I play sound a bit more dark and evil. I know a lot of it depends on modes and such, people have suggested using the phrygian mode, using chromatism, and saying that it depends on what kind of progression I am playing my music over.
Anyways, any tips or stuff like that would be sick, thanks guys

I don't know how many of you listen to metal here, but I assume a great number of you do.
If you're anything like how I was, I was growing tired of the predictable ways of metal. Intro, verse, chorus, solo, blah.
I find that this band is amazing, not only in terms of musicianship, but originality as well. They have interesting arrangements, and are anything but predictable. There is no way you can hate on these guys.

Fretboard Memorization

I'm currently in the process of memorizing the entire fretboard. I want to be able to know what any given note is when pointed to. I know this is something that comes from practice and time. I just never knuckled down and stuck to it. I've decided to concentrate on the e strings first because they mirror each other. You get two for the price of one. Is there anything that helps expedite this process?
