Stuck In a Rut? Have you learned the Minor Pentatonic?

Once in a while, we guitar players go through "ruts". We can't figure out anything new to play, we get discouraged by things that seem maybe a little too hard, and we don't progress with our dope skills. I have found that one quick cure to being in a rut is to learn a new set of scales. Once you do that, you will find yourself changing styles with your lead playing, and hearing new combinations.
A wonderful tool to have as a beginning axe virtuoso, is the Minor Pentatonic scales. You will be able to play lead over tons and tons of rock, blue, and metal music in just a short time.
I have written an example in tabs below. This tab is the Am Pentatonic. You could use this scale to solo over something in that key.
e--------------------------------------5--8-----
B-------------------------------5--8-----------
G------------------------5--7-------------------
D-----------------5--7--------------------------
A-----------5--7-------------------------------
E----5--8---------------------------------------
You can move this scale up and downt he fret board following the same pattern, and depending on which note you start on, that will change the key to fit the music. You can also use this scale for finger exercises.

Go ahead and mess around with it, hopefully it will help get you out of your rut!

Good Luck
