Despite what I've heard many say, The Fall of Troy are not at all like the Mars Volta. Given if you are into the progressive grind-solo you get from Omar then you will probably enjoy TFOT, but it's a completely different genre. Basically, take your average post-HXC screamo band, make it a 3-piece, 20-year olds who play like they're 30, and take away any mainstream inhibitions. Chromatic chord progressions, riffage that escapes the key signature, alternate timings. TFOT will take you on a sonic journey, and Manipulator is even toned down compared to their 2nd CD, Doppelganger.
I read another review once that really hit the nail on the head as far as what there is to say about The Bled. They are the epitome of what the Hardcore genre is today, which is a little vague seeing as there are so many different influences. BUT here we have throaty screams, heartfelt vocals, a large amount of breakdowns featuring offset palm muting, and not a whole lot of solos. As a whole, there is NOTHING wrong with The Bled and they're very tight together. If you're new to heavy music, or hardcore specifically, I'd take a listen to Pass the Flask and you'll get about 4 or 5 years of records worth.
