Simply incredible. If anyone told you that all death metal is mindless screaming they haven't listened to Opeth. The album is among opeth's best; a fusion of soft, progressive, acoustic sounds and death metal growls and crushing riffs. The entire albums is arranged perfectly, allowing for multiple listens to focus on different instruments. The death metal vocals are actually understandable for the most part, making it easier to get into rather than say In Flames or Children of Bodom, while the clean vocals are soft and haunting matching the deep lyrics.
A truly classic work that stands out as one of the finest new wave of british heavy metal albums. Dual guitar harmonies, masterful bass playing, and powerful operatic vocals make this one gem every metal fan should own.
