If anyone claims to me that they have heard the allman brothers, I will ask them if they have ever heard this album. If they haven't, then they have never TRULY heard them in their true brilliance. This album is a juggernaut; it has quite possibly THE greatest jamming of all time ever committed to record, it has my second favorite guitarist of all time and easily the greatest electric slide guitarist of all time (the guitar playing style, not the dance, I know you were thinking that.), Duane Allman in his absolute prime and only to months before his tragic motorcycle accident and resulting death on it, it has the also great Dickey betts on second lead guitar (they had 2 lead guitarists and no rhythm guitarist), it has the groovy organist and very soulful vocalist Gregg Allman, and above all it has some of the most incredible live band playing of all time. 1.) Statesboro Blues- A great blues tune originally written by Blind Willie Mctell, Duane does some awesome blues slide work on this track and everybody grooves. It's very short for a live allmans song, and it provides a great example of great playing by the allmans outside of a long jam context. 2.) Done Somebody Wrong- This is one of the last in the section of the album with the shorter tunes. It's a Elmore James tune. Pretty cool. 3.) Stormy Monday- This was a kind of "transition song" on the original album. It's about halfway between a jam and a short tune (It's almost 9 minutes long, sort of short for a allman jam) Nice, easy, slow, quiet, bluesy, really atmospheric stuff. really well played. 4.) In Memory of Elizabeth Reed- Finally, we get to the jams, and this is a good one. That riff near the end is just mind blowing. Great solos taken, and there are so many brilliant lick and riffs in there. Really intricate song, and things are about to get even better. 5.) You Don't Love Me- Great tune. As Gregg says at the start, "Put your hands together for this one." Starts out nice and funky, with a great guitar riff, played teasingly quiet, and then the organ joins in and things REALLY kick off. Eventually everything starts changing- time signatures, tempos, keys, instrumentation- and we go into a whole different dimension. 6.) Hot 'Lanta- Nice and erie riffs here. Nice organ solo and an atmospheric ending. 7.) Whipping Post- This was the climax of the original album, and for good reason. Everything just clicks perfectly. Guitar playing is really incredible and it's manages to be 23 minutes long and never get boring. The first time I heard this track I spent all 23 minutes with my mouth hanging open in amazement. In conclusion; BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!
