2012 Doomsday Postponed

I saw an article on yahoo that suggests the Mayan profecy that the world will end in 2012 is postponed because the calculation to convert from their calandar to the currently used one is flawed.  It suggests that the Mayan calandar actually ends 50 to 100 years later.

My Question is this... did it ever occur to anyone that the creators of the Mayan calandar just decided that 2012 was so far away that it didn't make any sense to continue with it and that someone else would take care of that problem as it neared 2012 or whatever the actual date was?

Damm, I was so looking forward to the end of the world... Now there is a chance I won't live to see it.
