-skinniest string
next skinniest...
yada
yada
yada
fattest

the numbers tell you what fret to play, the vertical alignment say in what order to play

ie....

-3-------------3---
-3-------------3---
-0---2--4--2-0---
-0-------------2---
-2-------------3---
-3-----------------

you'd be playing a G chord...some notes on your G string (3rd skinniest), and then a C2 chord.

You read sequentially from left to right. What ever is on the right of something (on any line) is to be played after whatever is on the left of it (on any line). When numbers align vertically on multiple strings, that's strumming a chord. When they align horizontally, they are sequential notes on the same string.

You can download from the web but I don't remember if it is free..I know that demo version is absolutely free. You have to check on the net.

I think it costs a few bucks but I'm not sure. In case it is not free and you don't want to pay the few bucks, there is a silmilar and compatible program under a free liscense. It is called tuxguitar (originally made for linux) but they have ported it to windows too.
