I not sure which to go with, i love them both the same. Ahh i think im gonna have to go with nylon because they have that earthly sound and i love fingerpicking and those are made for that. Still Love steel strings as much as nylon, I just prefer to use nylon better. How about you?

I'm more of a steel string fan, I studied classical guitar for years and in order to get a pure tone you have to put a lot of work into shaping and buffing your nails so that there are absolutely no imperfections otherwise you get a scratchy tone. All that nail work is a bit much plus it doesn't look very manly or rock 'n' roll!

I personally love the twang of a fresh set of phosphor bronze strings although they don't stay bright for long so I usually use Elixir nanoweb custom light strings.

Nylon on a classical guitar only. Steel on anything else. It's really a matter of application and the sound you're going after. The prefernce, for me, depends completely on what I'm playing.

i prefer nylons on a classical guitar with cutaway. i have 3 of them, 2 with cutaways and the other a traditional classical. regarding steel strings, i bought a 12 string for my wife when she decided she was going to learn guitar. she suspected i bought the 12 string for myself, but i told her i won't play *her* guitar. so it's been sitting in it's original box for going on 4 years now! LOL!

I'd have to go with steel simply because i've never gotten into much classical music, and steel is much better than nylon for most stuff

Not into classical (mostly cause I'm not that good) but I love playing my nylon I love the sound, the feel, and the cool stuff you can do with your right hand. I feel fortunate that I have a choice when I play to pick up the nylon, or the steel, or the electric. And I would like some info on doing my nails for playing the nylon I don't know that i would like the hassle but I do like the sound.

Oh by the way, in my mind nylon guitars do not automatically equal classical. Steel does not equal folk and electric does not equal metal. I think guitar equals music Hendrix didn't do what he did because he accepted classifications

Totally different animals but yeah I like the nylon-string sound and feel. Took my first guitar-steps on a nylon string guitar. Too bad neither of the nylon-string guitars here now are in good condition. So I stick to my steelers.

I only have my steel string acoustic, but my mom has a 1970-something Ovation with nylon strings, and it is a beauty to play. For the sound, I prefer steel. But for comfort and ease, the nylon. They are so much easer to press down, which is good for smaller hands like mine. I push the steel strings on myself to toughen up...and because they sound so pretty. :oP

I play a classical, with nylon. You can buy carbon (nylon-like) strings, that are just like nylon but sound more like steel. I have a friend who bought a set of carbon for his classical. To use a pick, put steel/carbon strings. If you use fingers, put nylon/carbon strings.

It think you should go with whatever fits your fancy.. it all depends on what type of music you play as well. The classical nylon string guitar is meant for classical and is also ideal for folk guitar. Yet, at the same time, if you want to play a lot of popular things, especially chords and rhythm guitar, it would be better to go with a steel string. I personally play classical guitar. I love my nylong string, but I still like picking up a steel string to sing and play for example.
