Im sorry. I just can't do it anymore. i can't sit through crappy Pink Floyd song after crappy Pink Floyd song just to hear an amazing solo. Maybe its because I don't do drugs. Maybe its because I'm American and just don't get it. I'm man enough to relize that the majority do not agree with me but I still just can't stand any of their songs. (With the exception of Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb and those are just ok)

I think it's contextual.
I kind of know what you mean because I thought this for a while and then ended up going full circle and loving them!

I think what I love about them is that I think "what must it have been like to hear that for the first time in it's era" (I'm 23)
I do the same with Hendrix and Led Zep etc.
Stuff these days rarely takes me by suprise but I cannot imagine how amazing it must have been to hear some of those tones, waves and general sonic debauchery.

The improvised vocal solo on Great Gig in the Sky for example just comes out of no where. Love it!

That said, it's all still really relevant and current - I still love them compaired to any music going atm.

Music< I think is all about perception.

Me, for instance, I love Floyd, but hate their Syd Barret days. Just too bloated.

Pink Floyd are some pretty incredible artists. I wish I had had the chance to see em when i was younger, i wish they weren't to old to tour, i'd be all over it....

I agree its all about how you percieve the material...either it hits you or it don't. But I grew up listening to this stuff, Zep, beatles, stones, floyd all on vinyl back in the day, my father has quite the record collection...

If you like gilmores playing maybe check out his solo albums some good stuff there....

I used to be a Floyd hater and then something stirred deep inside me. Now they are one of my favorites. I don't like the Syd Barrett days either though. It all sounds so silly to me. There are still a lot of their songs that I don't like but the ones that I do like, I love. And I find myself going through phases with them. I will love one song and be like, "Eh" about another song. Then a year later its the other way around. I just love them.

Funny.. I like PF but think Gilmore is an overrated pretentious hack. He does some nice stuff but without PF as a basis he rambles. Have you seen his solo stuff?? Boring doesn't begin to describe it.

There.. I"ve said it an feel better.. no therapy for me today I guess.

i can still dig pink floyd. i guess more for the songcrafting than anything else. and i like a few of the solo gilmour cuts as well. but more interesting to me is the old school floyd(not barret stuff). pompei era..and playing those songs is a bunch of fun as well. it's a lot easier to appreciate them once you learn some of the material. of course that happens with a lot of bands. you may hate them and then you play thru a tune or two and totally change your mind about them.

Guys, I'm trying here. After this post I borrowed a copy of The Wall (cd... not the movie) from a co worker. I listened to it last night with a completly unbiased veiw of them. I actually sat down and looked foward to listening to it. Yea.....i still can't stand it.

What else can i try? Dark Side of the Moon? I'm trying to see what you guys see in them.

I like "The Final Cut" and "Animals" - slightly off topic I really like Roger Waters "Amused to Death" where he has Jeff Beck playing guitar.

I started playing in 66 and listened mainly to BritRock and I've never liked Pink Floyd. I've never owned a Floyd album, cassette, CD, DVD or T-shirt. I've never learnt one of their songs. I lived through the era when you couldn't go anywhere without hearing "Dark Side" and I am so sick to death of that album, even though I've never owned it.

Marshall you are not alone!

PS: I've also never owned a Dire Straits album, or Beatles, Eagles, Metallica, GnR or EVH or any other Hair Metal (except Racer X)

Well... I kinda like the Pulse album (yes I know it is no new material) as chill-out music boosted by great guitar leads... It is a special moods kind of thing. Normal Pink Floyd is a little hard for me to digest as well.

Yes...try Dark Side of the Moon.

There are several popular bands that I don't see what people see in them. The Rolling Stones and Iron Maiden come to mind for me.

Cool. He brought me Dark Side of the Moon today. I'll check it out and let you guys if I have been converted.

BTW Richey, I agree. I missed the boat with Stones and Maiden, The Who, Rush, in some ways Hendrix (puts on bullet proof vest and prepares to be shot).

I never got into the Who as well. But the one band everybody used to love that I couldn't see was KISS for whatever reason. Their songs just seemed stupid to me. And it's not like I was above simple music and moronic lyrics. I grew up listening to rap...

Kiss was a phenomena you just had to grow up with. Like Pokeman or the power rangers (both of which I don't get either).

On the Pink Floyd, I've always been a big floyd fan. Not a huge fan of the wall, but I do love dark side of the moon. Got to get out of the house and do some exploring listening to that record. Take it fishing with you sometime, whoa, don't even need the drugs!

I can understand why some people don't like Hendrix either. Most of the stuff released after he died has no quality control. Even though I'm a fan I never listen to anything after Band of Gypsies, except for 1 studio album which seems to have a different name every time it's re-released and a different name in each country.

I don't like Kiss but I can understand their popularity. It's mainly due to the timing. They came along as the music video was becoming the norm and they were a very visual act. If they'd happened in the 60s, as a purely audio act, we'd say "Who's Kiss?"

Ok update. Dark Side of the Moon is a great record! Wow! I really enjoyed it. Still doesn't change how I feel about The Wall. "Us and Them" is my new favorite Pink Floyd song. Thank you all. I now love Dark Side of the Moon. Its a start I guess.

I'm not a huge Floyd fan, I enjoy hearing them but I don't seek them out. I can relate to how you feel though. I have the same problem with Dream Theater. I can tell they are all real talented musicians but for some reason the band sucks. I've tried several times to get into them and end up bore to tears after a couple songs. The same goes for Rush. You can hear the skill involved, it's just so fricking boring.
