Some good points. Here's some more:

-Many would actually argue that Kurt Cobain himself killed rock as Nirvana killed hair metal and the guitar solo, and the progression to watered down rock and guitar playing evident today.

-You are only speaking of the bands that get radio play. There's lots of bands around that play metal and classic rock that come out with new stuff. I don't particularly know who they are, but I know they are out there. Dragonforce and Shadows Falls and whoever.

-There's so much older stuff to listen to, it could last you a lifetime. All of the 'good' stuff from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. You could spends decades rediscovering that stuff, so I'm not so much concerned about the new stuff coming out.

Well, I agree with the 90's being a crappy decade for rock, but I think Cobain largely made it that way. When the grunge movement came in it killed shred. Suddenly it became cool to throw guitar solos out the window. Nirvana didn't do bad songs, don't get me wrong. It just seemed that guitar oriented music became very unpopular, and a lot of the guys in those awful hair bands were never given a chance to flow with the times. People have to remember that they were only giving listeners what they wanted with the makeup and big hair. Then everybody collectively said, we don't want that crap anymore. We want this crap now.

It's the same with every decade.. Always bemoaning the fact that something somewhere is not as good..

in the sixties it was "what happened to good rock and roll" in the 70's it was "what happened to good rock and roll" in the 80's ... well you get the point..

"with the death of Kurt Cobain so died good rock music with him" Oh please.. there are a TON of new and actually very good things out there.. If you are looking to Clear Channel to get all your music from then excuse me but, you are getting exactly what you deserve.

Clear Channel is a corporation that owns LOTS of radio stations. There's many people who hate on Clear Channel. The criticism is Clear Channel kills off creativity and many bands don't make it to the airwaves as a result.

I would strongly disagree that "good rock music" rested on the shoulders and died along with a heroin junkie.

I think that the music you like the best is the music you heard in your generation. My biggest influences were from the mid 70's to early 80's era. Bands like The Eagles, Skynyrd, Doobie Brothers, 38 Special, ZZ Top ect.

It was not so much about speed and rocking hard but good songs with good chord progressions and good lyrics and well played solos. Not shred speed and volume.

One thing Cobain did do was get kids to believe that you did not have to be a good guitar player to be successful. But if it got guitars in their hands, I will give him credit for that. I just hope he did not cause any to pick up needles too.

God, I hate post like this. Rock is dead, where are all the good bands, etc. The music is there, go find it. Music changes, it always has and always will. It changes for the same reasons that you are different from your parents and they were different from theirs, you grew up with different media, different attitudes, different everything. You are a musician make the music you want to hear, be the sound you think is missing. Go find the young bands that are out there already doing it, or sit around and bitch that rock is dead. Sorry to go off like this but come on the only thing that is dead is your curiosity.

Good post! One of the guys in the band has a 20 year old son that has his own band. I went and saw him last week. I was entertained. It was not the radio stuff. You just have to look a little harder these days.

"Your really wrong,do you know who the people were in the sixties that were saying "what happened to good rock and roll".They were more than likely the older generation, that preferred Elvis to the Beatles"

Oh I see.. much like the people now that prefer Nirvana to say Maroon 5..

Clear Channel is the corporation that owes somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% of the Radio stations in the US.

You will hear EXACTLY what the PDs in corporate want you to hear no matter where you happen to live..
It's ALL programmed from the Corporate HQ..

"I am not part of the OLDER GENERATION,Im apart of the age group that is expected to consume this music, that is why Im aloud to gripe about this"

I'm sorry but where exactly did I say "older generation".. that was your term..

You're allowed to gripe about anything you wish. Part of your rights but, to make blanket statements and not expect people to argue with you is absurd. Entitled to your opinion? of course you are.. No matter how wrong it is :-)
The simple fact of the matter is the majority of your age group is consuming this music..

This post is giving me a headache.

You have *no* idea how luck you are to be living in this day and age. The internet is a treasure trove of killer music. To large and daunting for you? Joint last.fm and build a library based on "sounds like" and "if you like band x, try band y". Back when I was in my teens, we didn't have the internet to find music we liked. We had word of mouth, mix tapes, fanzines, or we simply started our own bands.

YOU WILL NOT FIND DECENT MUSIC ON THE RADIO OR MTV. There is so much payola and playlists are dictated from corporate HQ half way across the country. Why do you think radio revenues are down? Because no one is listening. Just because you are "expected" to be a mindless, gluttonous consumer does not mean you have to be. You have to rise above that shit.

Not really. It's more from having this discussion over and over and over... Not happy with music today? Start a band and start a scene. Make it happen. Don't whine like a suburban brat.

You know, a good part of this negativity and abrasiveness are coming from you, dude. You are very narrow-minded and seem to refuse to accept any viewpoint other than one that supports yours.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but you're coming across as an overly opinionated gasbag.

That being said, I'm with everyone else. There is *tons* of good new music out there. Just because YOU don't think it's good doesn't mean that everyone else should also think it sucks. Get used to people having opinions different than yours.

"But with the death of Kurt Cobain so died good rock music with him."
I agree with you on that.
Most of the bands I listen to have split up by now....
but I guess for a more modern band, I like the Foo Fighters.
