ok so i know there was a little discussion about this a few months ago, but have a new fire flaring in me darn it.
i only got into Stevie Ray about 2 months ago or so, and already i have a few albums.
i just read about him on the net and found out that he got his first guitar when he was only 7!
the man really impresses me. he can play faster than some metal bands, and yet he keeps a great rhythm and always makes an amazing sound from it.
is there anyone else who shares my amazement?
also, can anyone recommend a song of his that is fairly easy on guitar? :D
discuss?

Life by the Drop

Tough little intro piece but the rest is blues shuffle and there is no solo.
In the key of A.

Great for acoustic guitar.

I love Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of my personal favorites is Rude Mood/Hideaway. SO GOOD! This man is a much better (in my opinion) musician than most out there today. He knew what he was doing, and how to do it. He played with feel rather than just technicality alone. So yeah, Stevie 1 the rest of the poser metal guitarists (only the posers cause there are the greats, Steve Vai, Tony Iommi... so on and so forth) -2434213. Thank you for listening to my babble.

I'm a SRV fan too. I even visited the SRV memorial in Austin once.

I remember when SRV died (27 August 1990). I was deployed and serving in Saudi Arabia and heard about it on the news. I wasn't a fan then but I knew who he was and recognized his name. That same day I bought my first SRV album on cassett. I think that was the moment when I started to change from playing strictly heavy metal to learning differn't styles and particularly blues.

I've also got a sweet framed photo of SRV hanging in my house. It was a gift from my wife a few years ago. I'll have to take a pic and post it for you guys to see.

I love Vaughan, he has his own style that he can do anything with, and its not only his unbelievable playing that gets me, all his songs, hes playing at the same time hes singing, a skill that is very hard to do when you are playing lead parts. the only other person of course we all know who mastered that is Vaughan's Greatest idol, Jimi Hendrix

SRV is one of the few guitar players in my opinion who was plugged in straight to his soul. No thinking involved. I remember a comment by Clapton that nobody liked to share a stage with him as his playing made everybody else look amateurish. Albert King said of Stevie "While others made the guitar talk, Stevie made it sing." His playing was melodic not technical fretboard gymnastics.. I guess you can tell I loved the guy, the world lost a great asset.

"srv is the best in blues"

WHAT??? I was staying out of this until this comment.

SRV was a damn fine player but "best in blues" I think not. Maybe best at bringing white college frat kids into re-cycled blues but that is about where that stops.

I must agreed with Mr. Cox. 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' is a song that every human life form knows. Throwing an easy blues-riff on it makes it just flat-out fun!!

Just for the sake of discussion (of topic), Stevie dies after finishing a concert a few miles from here. He'd performed with Eric Clapton, Robert Cray .. and I think Buddy Guy was there. After hearing that it would be a long bus-ride back into downtown Chicago -- Stevie jumped on a helicopter that was making a run (probably down to Meigs Field) downtown.

The copter crashed in minutes due to what I believe was a drugged-up pilot.

Stevie had just cleaned himself up. He'd been a really challenged man with drugs and alcohol. I believe it was John Hammond who helped get him back on track. I literally cried that morning I heard. When someone works so hard to get their life together -- to see it end tragically seems unfair.

If you like SRV, read-up on how he got his breaks. The David Bowie (Guitar solo on 'Let's Dance') and Jackson Browne stories are wild!! Also, there's a great story on him totally embarrassing Eric Clapton using a 'stock' fender. I also recommend a DVD set of Stevie at Montreaux. For anyone who's never SEEN Stevie -- you have no idea how HARD this guy worked (all the time a cigarette hangin' from his lips).

The first Montreaux he played -- they booed him (yeah the french suck). He returned in glory, though !! The DVD covers both shows.

BTW... you can find tab and such for versions of Mary Had a Little Lamb. Please know that it originated with a great Chicagoan, Mr. Buddy Guy. Check that version out, too !!

Gotta run !!
