Id say it's Jimi Hendix, because he was the first guitarist to do the national anthem on guitar, also because he invented the playing the guitar with your mouth.

Although this thread is nothing new, and has been one millions of times before,
props to you for coming up with the two most unexpected reasons. :D

The greatest guitarist is Gaetano Vinaccia. He built the first six string guitar in 1779. Without him, we would all be playing xylophones, or something.

"The earliest extant six string guitar was built in 1779 by Gaetano Vinaccia (1759 - after 1831) [2] [3] in Naples, Italy. The Vinaccia family of luthiers is known for developing the mandolin. This guitar has been examined and does not show tell-tale signs of modifications from a double-course guitar. [4] Authenticity of guitars before the 1790s is often in question. This also corresponds to when Moretti's 6-string method appeared, in 1792."

"because he invented the playing the guitar with your mouth."

What??? That "trick" had been around since, at least, the mid 50's. That was nothing new.

I say the greatest guitar player is Paul Gilbert because he's the first to play guitar with a power drill.

Geeze, the old Mel Bay way of learning. I remember everybody trying to learn from his stuff in the sixties and nobody learned a thing.
