hmm. There are a few on the list that I like, and I guess it comes down to what the definition of "best" is.
I'll say my top 4 favorite guitarists from that list are (in no paticular order): Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Kirk Hammett, and Kurt Cobain.

unfortanatly your list is bloated with primarily rock guitarist. a better list would contain players from all types of music. such as michael hedges, brent mason, mcglaughlin, roy clark, george benson, roy buchannon, gatemouth brown, phil keggy, buddy guy, johnny winter, etc. ...and surely stevie ray vaughn belongs on there instead of ..say..ace frehely??? or how bout john petrucci, marty freidman, jason becker, grew howe, vinnie moore, vai, satch, tony mcalpine, chris impelliteri ,etc.

gary richrath???? now that's a funny one. decent player but an odd one on any list...high infidelity being his shining moment.

but from your list exclusively i would say:

1. eddie van halen
2. dimebag
3. nuno bettencourt
4. randy rhoads
5. jimi hendrix
6. warren de martini

Wow. Listen to much classic rock lately. Most of those guys are great, etc. but I'd say Mike Mccready is a bit overrated. Pearl Jam is an average band to me, and I think STP has much more innovate songs and playing from their period and genre or even Soundgarden, so I'd replace him with DeLeo or Thayil. Ditto with Mick Mars. There's tons of better hair metal guys, Bratta, Sabo, Lynch, etc...

I swear -- if I see another "Who's your favorite guitar player' post I am going to hurl.

It simply gets OLD listening to a bunch of folks over-hype a bunch of metal-heads and shredders. Open your minds, people -- maybe your ears will follow.

I would agree, although musical maturity is often a function of age and/or ear development. You don't know how old these posters are. As my musical ear improved, I started listening to more complex types of music, etc, or maybe vice-versa. If the me of 2008 tried to get the me of 1990 to listen to Ella Fitzgerald (who I love) the me of 1990 would have laughed in my face. It was all about Public Enemy man!

Cool. If you like swing check out a guitarist by the name of Barney Kessel. Melodic, impressive, but not too 'out of the box'.

Yeah Danno (via Joba) Barney K is a great-one. I am a huge fan of Kenny Burrell who did a lot of stuff with BK and a guy named Herb Ellis.

Swing-players all talk about Charlie Christian, as does George Benson and Earl Klugh. Swing guitarists from the 30's and forties were players that ran intervals, triads and arpeggios on the instrument -- rather than just strumming and picking. Quite revolutionary. really.

If you like Ella -- check out her stuff recorded with Joe Pass. Two great musicians sittin' in a couple of chairs. Absolutely amazing accompaniment by Mr. Pass.

I also know that they called Chet Atkins 'Mr. Guitar' for a reason. I am not a 'country' fan ... but the guy was a class-act with absolutely amazing technique.

The fact that someone could list '50 great guitarists' and not include Joe Pass, Charlie Christian, Wes Mongomery, Chet Atkins, Lenny Breau, Charlie Byrd, Larry Carlton, Tommy Tedesco, Lee Ritenour, Pat Metheny, Ted Green, Andre Segovia, Leo Kottke, John McGlaughlin, .....blah, blah, blah ..

Ok .. sometimes I get carried away ??
