Zakk Wylde

I've got a question for you: Who's the best: Dimebag Darrell from Pantera and Damageplan, or Zakk Wylde from Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society? Vote, and then post your reason(s) why.

(note: this is NOT a question as to who is the best guitarist of all time, so don't start flaming me because you got upset that I didn't include your favourite guitarist. Just answer the question)

I prefer the Dime. But my opinion is subjective like anyone else's. Heck, somebody may think both suck because they don't like that style of music.

Haha why isn't the question fair?

By the way, was anyone else surprised that Zakk Wylde didn't make it into the top 100 riff-writers of 2007?

I'm not. I confess I haven't heard much BLS music, but I sought some out based on Zakk Wylde's reputation. What I checked out was good, but nothing earth shaking. So I didn't seek to hear any more.

I would have to go with Dime - even though I am a bigger fan of and more influenced by Zakk. Dime bag was probobly one of Zakks heros. Dime is one of those iconic players you made people want to play guitar (Eddie Van Halen, Clapton, Hendrix) and the fact he is dead puts him in a very special class.

RIP Dime - we will miss you!

That's probably true. You have to be pretty hardcore to set up recording equipment next to your toilet haha. I'd pay so much cash to get my hands on a few of those riff tapes...

I have to vote for Zakk on this question...both are mind blowing players and in my opinion extremely creative and talented...but I've heard Zakk play several different styles and even combine those styles in some instances...Dime, I have no doubt also has a firm grasp of styles outside metal, but I've yet to hear a recording of him doing it. I'm basing this on what I know of both players...doesn't mean I'm right, just an opion formed on what I know to be fact (although I don't profess to have all the facts).

Opinions are like.........., well we all have one. I am going with Dime on this one. They each have their own style, technique, setups, rigs, and so on. Dime had a way with a guitar that has often tried to be duplicated but never done. He has nuances in the way he played that were not always picked up on and that is what made him.I always get that feeling when I listen to Dime play that I missed something and I must listen to it again, even today I hear something different in his licks, I don't do this when I listen to BLS.
Zakk on the other hand has a style that is hardcore, cut and dried kick you in the seat of the pants guitar. Yes he has recorded other styles of music but it was either fast or slow nothing in between. Zakk is to be considered for the fact that he can play a piano very well, which does make him a well rounded musician but not the guitarist that Dime is.
There, you have my opinion and was happy to give it.
BY the way I gave most everyone a credit for this ah heck I will go back and put one on for everyone just for posting. This is good stuff

well said, Peavey 5150...I especially respect someone elses opinion when it's different if they can at least explain how they arrive at the different opinion.

drives me nuts when someone just says someone sucks and can't explain why. lol...of course, to quote Suicidal Tendencies "Just because you don't like it don't mean it ain't no good" - from the song You Can't Bring Me Down on the album Lights Camera Revolution.

Thanks Tyler, I call em as I hear them. Let me add this to my opinion. In no way does my opinion have anything to do with Dime's passing, although it was a sad day. I was listening to these guy's live when they were playing clubs in and around the DFW area and when they made it big Dime never changed he stayed the good ole Texas boy that he always was. His playing kept on getting bigger and better and the attack that he had on the guitar was ONE. He used it as an appendage of his body, if you take a look back at some of the Pantera videos, early to late you can see how he grew.

that's true, you can see him (Dime) progress before your eyes...same with Zakk...in the beginning he was a combination of the best of all of Ozzy's guitarists but had not put his own stamp on Ozzy's sound...now he's got his own identifiable style and Ozzy will never be the same without him.

Dime and Damage Plan came to my city 6 months to the day he died and I couldnt' afford to go. They were opening for Slayer...I thought, oh I'll have another chance, even if I have to travel to another city later on...I regret not charging those tickets to my credit card now.

I bet if I'd seen him live and not just the footage from the Pantera videos I would have seen a side of his playing that maybe wouldn't have changed my vote, but would have made the decision alot harder.
