Listen to everything James Jamerson recorded. What am I talking about? That would take hours. Seriously, listen to some jamerson, and country, and metal, and funk, and classical, and punk, and jazz, and blues, and rockabilly, and ambient, and hair metal, and just steal everything you can.

Only Jamerson? No Victor Bailey, Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Bootsy Collins, Chris Squier, or Geddy Lee?

Speaking of...you could try out some Rush tunes. "Tom Sawyer" has a fairly simple bass line that does more than just reflect the chords. If you're feeling up to a challenge, grab a pick and learn some Chris Squier bass lines from his time in Yes. "Roundabout" is a good one with a classic bass line.

I only suggested him because bass players automatically go for the rush, yes, victor wooten (not easy), and jaco. Nobody wants to be like jamerson even if he was the one of the defining names in bass.

If your looking for easy and metal "Runnin' with the Devil" comes to mind. It's not Pastorius, or Wooten, but it's easy to play.

AC/DC. Pretty simple stuff that sounds great. And it doesn't really matter what your into, you can learn from just about any type of music.

If you want a kick ass bass line that will take time to master but impress people when you do try MuSE - Hysteria.

If you want to get seriously challenged on the bass, I suggest anything by protest the hero, their Bass player, arif, has amazing tone, and he is an extremely good bass player. Some of his riffs are intensely hard, but if you want to build up chops and you are a metal fan, this is a must, as the odd time signatures will for sure have you working hard.
As much as it may be difficult not to use one, I strongly suggest not using a pick. I find that when you use a pick, you are giving up on the element of bass playing that makes it unique and more challenging, and less like a guitar. I find you can also control your tone, volume and rhythm a lot better if you are a strong finger player. But that is just my opinion.
