So i was wondering how everyone here plays bass. Pick, finger-style, slap? Like Victor, or Jaco, or Mingus? You play jazz? rock? or funk?

I like using my fingers. I sometimes use a pick.
I don't know how to slap.

I'm a hack anyway.

Haha I pretty much always do fingerstyle, but when I get to use a bass with roundwounds I can't resist slapping it around a bit. I susaly stay away from picks unless theres a realy specific tone I need.

yeah I definately play fingerstyle and am trying to start to slap. I used to play with a pick, but got rid of it when I started to take my instrument more seriously. In my opinion, picks are for guitars.

There always seems to be tension between pick players and finger-style players. In other forums
I have seen multi paged threads degrade into mud slinging and flame wars over the issue, its worse than putting a staunch Republican and a radical Democrat in a room. But honestly its all personal preference so I have trouble seeing where the animosity comes from.

Oh I definately don't hate on pick players, as much as I myself dislike using them. I maybe should have re-worded thatlol.
But ya, I used to definately think that people who played with picks weren't any good, until I started really playing a lot of shows and toured, and you see an immense amount of players who use picks who are just amazing.

O sorry dude nothing at all towards you, just trying to avoid a forseen conflict before it arises. I really dislike picks too.

P.S. what the alphabet would look like if Q and R took a holiday.

Fingerstyle. I recently tried to use a pick, but it felt so awkward that it kept falling out of my hand. I hate the sound you get with one, too.

I'm not much of a bassist as Dan knows, but when I do play bass, it is always either slap or fingers. I personally hate using a pick to play bass, even though I'm a guitarist. I just don't like the tone at all, and they just don't have the same feel. That is my opinion anyway. I always enjoy slapping! It is so much fun, and sounds great! It took me some time to get it right, but now, whenever I get a bass in my hands, I can't fight my urge to slap that thing!!

Finger style is my favorite, although very rarely I attempt slapping, with various results. Picking feels awkward to me.

I pick mainly. But I can slap and pluck and use my fingers and still keep up. I started off playing bass with my fingers, which resulted in learning slap and pluck. Well, I knew how to slap and pluck from playing guitar (Don't ask lol), so it wasn't a hard transition.

My pick playing is mostly for rock/metal/punk, whatever. So I save using my fingers for more groovy songs, that require a lot of funk.

I use finger style, and play Jazz, and Rock. But I will use a pick sometimes if my fingers get tired or I need to play faster.
