Somehow this post wound up on Shane's post from some time back. Here it is again..

I've been looking around at several basses strictly for recording purposes. I'm seriously looking at the Ibanez EDB550. Ibanez seems to be highly regarded here. Can anybody give me feedback on this bass?

Ibanez EDB550 Features:

Neck: 5pc EDB4 Wenge/Bubinga neck

NeckType: EDB4

Body: Light Ash body

Frets: Medium frets

Fingerboard: Rosewood

Inlay: Pearl Dot

Bridge: B100 bridge

The B100 is a good simple bridge. I have the B105 (since I have a 5-string) and I like it.

I don't like the idea of single coils. Humming is as much an issue on a bass as it is on a guitar. Be prepared to need a gate (I guess you won't be needing as much sustain as you need on the guitar, but still give it a test drive first). A friend bought a bass with a P-J pickup configuration and the feedback of the single coil made me wanna torture kittens (not really but you get the idea)...

The ash wood and single coils make me think it is destined for a brighter biting type of sound. I generally prefer a darker sound for myself.

No info on the electronics...

Looks sweet enough.

The SR looks equally sweet and is definitely more up my alley. But it's not ME who's shopping. There are so many bass sound flavours from all bright out front slapping and popping to fart sounds to abyssal fatness. I don't know what you're after.

I didn't understand from your post if by recording you meant "serious recording" or "fooling around". Either way, as a guitarist, this will be your only bass for quite a while, so be sure to dig whichever you choose.

Fred,

It all depends on what music you like. I picked the Ibanez SRX series because it has super high-output pickups and a 3 band passive EQ. Amazingly enough, it's versatile enough to cover jazz and blues just as easily as heavier music.

Those single coils will be fine. Jazz basses have used them for years. Keep in mind though you *will* get some buzz when you're using just one coil. That's another reason I chose the SRX...humbucking pickups ;)

I have tried an SR400QM an I was impressed. I've never had the opportunity to try an Ergodyne bass. They used to be made out of "reson-cast" which was basically compressed sawdust and epoxy I think the newer ones are actual wood.

Personally, between the two you posted, I would get the SR. Have you ever had a chance to check out their ATK series bass? That's another cool one that I almost bought.

So...that's the question: What sound are you shooting for?

I'll probably be going for a harder sound most of the time. As soon as I heard about buzz, I was like..I'm outta' there. I want as much versatility as I can get, but since I'm stuck in a time warp, most of my stuff will be hard rock, bluesy stuff. I'm basically buying it to record with. It's kind of hard putting down a song once you get the idea and you have no bass track. I checked out the ATK's. Nice! How much do they run for?
