So since its cool to check out and critique each other's playing (constructive criticism only) here is the place to put a video of you shredding and have it analyzed and a scale from 1-5, 5 being hip and 1 being pretty lame. I am mostly kidding about the rating but please contribute! Put up a video and give some tips and comments on what others post.

My video is from a few weeks back playing Maiden Voyage with my brother at a local coffee shop. This is only the second half of the song (we jammed out for a while and You Tube doesn't like really big files) but if you want to see the first part check out my page.

And remember post your vids too.

I like the obscurity of your playing. I'm wondering are you using scales, or chords, or what exactly are you doing?
Basically I know alot of scales, but my main instinct is to use pentatonic(GAAAAH KILL MEEE) and so I get some pretty boring sounding licks.
I give it a 3.5 are 3.5's allowed?

No offense but.... you sound like two people that have never touched instruments before and are definitely not playing along with each other. That said, I can't really tell, since I don't know what the tune is supposed to sound like.
I give you a 2/5.

And just to be clear... I'm not a good player myself.

Maybe I'll spend some time (or a lot of it more likely) shooting videos today.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh yeeeeeeeaaaah, you really shouldn't be talking about people not being able to play their instruments, because, honestly, you need to find some talent. out of curiosity, how long have you been playing guitar, because you really need to keep at it. and about the musicians you say "that have never touched instruments before and are definitely not playing along with each other" are actually some of the better people i've seen at their instruments. the bassist is amazing, and the piano player is one of the best jazz pianist i've heard. so, ibzRG, either don't talk trash to people who are truly better than you, and/or learn how to play music.

True, we are not playing "with each other", but rather intricately intertwining phrases of varied tonality in our own artistic interruption of a standard. I completely respect you not liking jazz, and you can say whatever you want about the style, but as I afore mentioned we are here for constructive criticism not to belittle. If you want to hear what the song originally sounded like check out Herbie Hancock. Also since you wanted the context of where the first video jumped in here is the first part of the song.

Rary I am using a variety of different things, switching between the chord tones, major and minor scales based upon the pianist and other modes, as well as some pretty silly chromatic madness. The pianist is way over my skill range so I cannot say what he is using to outline the form, but the form of the song is AABA. The A section consists four measure of D7sus4 followed by four measures of F7sus4. The B section four measures of Eflat7 sus4, four of Dflat7 sus4, four of D7sus4 and then four of F7sus4.

A sus4 chord consists of the root, the fourth and the fifth and in this song the seven. The chords are very nondescript so there is a ton of room to decide what third and other notes to put in. The song can quickly be changed between a major sound and a minor sound. The end on this video is mostly a D minor vamp but last time we played it the entire tune had a very bright sound.

yeah, about my last post in this thread, apparently a lot of people agree with me. ibzRG, you have recently accomplished an amazing task, you have gone down 81 webcred in less than a day. Maybe you should spend less time making fun of people who are better than you on forums, and spend more time practicing guitar, and then, maybe, you will develop into a mediocre guitarist, but the key word in that was maybe. also, then you might be able to regain that 81 webcred you have just so recently lost, but again the key word is might. good luck!

Basically I only see -3 in that reply. There aren't enough people to -90 me in G yet anyway.

If it sounds bad to me I'm allowed to say so. Maybe it is the high background noise drowning the music, but to me it didn't sound like big deal. I made no judgment on the players themselves, since this vid can hardly do them any justice. Feel free to post another vid.

I'm the first to admit I can't play well, but since when does that remove my right to talk? You don't have to agree with what I say but you should definitely know better than try to shut me up by being a snobby dick.

Now get rid of that cocky attitude and move on! Go raise your war flag elsewhere. This discussion is over as far as I'm concerned. I intend to actively stay out of flame wars like the one about to happen here.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM:
3.5/5
I liked the Pianist
I don't like the genre (not your fault)
It fits the atmosphere
It wasn't very technical
Wasn't good or bad

edit: that is the dumbest reason to flame I've ever seen. He has his rights to criticize, and you have your rights to criticize.
edit: edit: i see that a miraculous recovery of ibzRG has taken place.

i can see where everyone is coming from...

i watched the blue in green video and in the middle when you did a more straight bumped bassline, it was good. it seemed it worked better because it was consistent. even though the "theme" was quarter notes, it held it together. I think if you used more rhythmic themes, it would hold together a lot more. and make sure you keep into the chord tones. sometimes you used a scale, and that's fine, but you sorta want to keep chord tones on the beats, and part of the scale or larger extensions of the chord after the chord has been established. that could just mean 1 note, just as long as we know what's up.

so try to use some theme in the improv, and i think it will be a little more well received. oh....and try to tell the piano player to break up what he's doing. have some long stops sometimes for like a little bass solo, or you stop and he solos. it doesn't even have to be a stop, just longer rhythms for one instrument, and the other plays out.

So i mean love getting input on my playing, especially when it is actually critical and not just "O you sound 'insert adjective'" but i feel that the original intention of having many videos has been lost and this has turned into the talk about Dan thread. Anybody have any personal bass videos out there?
