Don't get bored...

Start out by learning three cords at a a time and 2-3 scales. This isn't the most fun to begin with but make a game out of it once you learn them.

Have fun moving around a scale, jumping notes and picking runs. You may find a lick that sounds cool... the discovery makes it worth it.

Get a DVD on chords, I am a fan of the one by SongXpress. It opened me up to a few different things I do with chords. Example, chortds G C & D and a regular die... 1 & 2 are G, 3 & 4 are C, 5 & 6 are D. Take a series of rolls (12 is good) and write down the chords. Now, I play them in a 4 count (g234|D234|C234|D234), 2 count (G2D4|C2D4|C2G4)and 1 count (GCDC|CDGG|DCDG). This will teach you transitions and build up the callouses on your fingertips.

Keep the guitar out, I will play for 10 minutes while my wife checks her email, 20 while I am waiting for her to get dress and hours if her and my son go to bed early.

Look at some of the other posts about building finger strength and speed. If I have an hour I try to divide my playing time 1/2 improving speed on chords & scales I know, half to learning new stuff, and stretch your wrist, hands and fingers before & after (takes 2 minutes).

Find chord books, and DVDs that will help you along the way. Find scale books. There are all manner of things to teach you. Listen to your B182 boys and play along with them, after learning your chords. Learn every chord and scale along the fret board, man. Learn it all, and you will be glad you did. Go and find a teacher at the local shop and have him get you started, then move on from there.

The phrase "practice makes perfect" couldn't be more apt when it comes to learning how to play the guitar. A huge component is training your hand to move in a specific way, you do that by building muscle memory so that your hand moves fluently and the only way to build muscle memory is by repeating the muscle action until it becomes natural.

So be prepared to put in some hours.

Don't give up, it will take time but it will be worth every second.

Information. Get as much information and knowledge you can. Get a book, read through it, practice it, get a DVD, watch it, practice along. Soon, you will be playing like 182. Have Fun!!!
