It's just a chord broken up, basically. You just play the chord note by note instead of "stacked" or all the notes at once.

Well, if you're interested in technical guitar, there's more to this. Yes, you can form a chord and pick each string at a time, and that's an arpeggio. And it usually sounds cool, and often pretty. But for octane-driven arpeggios, you are fingering the notes and picking them, almost like you would play a scale. But you're only playing the notes that belong to the chord. And to get your shred on, you learn to do this really fast, often with distortion blaring. And then there's sweep arpeggios, where instead of picking each note in the arpeggio, you kinda rake the pic across the strings. You can get really fast sweeping.

I think you'll be waiting a while to start then...it can take years to develop that kind of technical skill.

yes it is a broken chord essentially but often as you go up the neck you may use two or three chords in one appegio sweep...also you want to pick up a sweep by not letting your notes ring into the next or it will sound like a chord...the best way to do this is use the same notes of a chord but in a different position where you have to move your finger positions...also you want to release the last note before you play the next...so it's more than a broken chord but that is the basic definition of it.

here is a quick basic e harmonic minor sweep i wrote for you...with a couple of pull offs. ....harmonic minor appreggios are fun because you can figure them out mathematically in steps and sound nice or you can decend in diminished with harmonic minor and that sounds sweet too.. always mix your appegs...with a lick so it's not just a sweep (chord) but part of a melody...this is just a quick example and you can take it straight up the neck if you want....

fuck and while and writing more bull here is a way to start an harmonic and end in diminished...use this pattern anywhere on the neck to practice. I think i got it right (its getting late) but dimished appegs..are better than just [playing in diminshed because diminished is when you are playing half step down from the root so when you switch from harmonic minor to diminished appegg it works well together..not to say you can't play diminished without it being an appeggio...just that i personally if i were to play one step down from the root would only use it quickly as a chordal mode and the go back into something else....otherwise your all screwed up...
