I got an acoustic guitar recently and I am wonder what would people suggest for a book to learn from. I've seen several on the shelves, but I want to choose the best one so I don't inopportunely waste my time & money.

"The complete guitarist" and/or "the new complete guitarist". Hands down the best guitar book EVER.

Looking at that book, they seem to say that it's better as a reference/encyclopedia vs. tutorial. Is this true? What would you guys suggest as the best tutorial book??

I had learned music from piano lessons and formal percussion training and was a self taught guitar player. I had wanted to look at the guitar fretboard without referring back to a piano keyboard. There is a series called "Fretboard Logic" - it is a 3 book series which starts off basic and moves to the more complex dealing with chords and scales and modes and does it by explaining it in terms of the fretboard to help make it easier then simply memorizing - although it will not completely alleviate memorization I did find it a great tool.

I have found one of the best resource/tutorial books available would have to be "Guitar for Dummies". It covers a huge range of stuff, and is generally written in terms that anybody can understand. It starts out with the basics and gradually gets tougher as you work through the book. You can use it for either electric or acoustic guitar, and there are lessons on all different styles of playing from Blues and Jazz, through to Rock and Classical. It also has sections on maintaining your guitar, what to look for when purchasing, chord diagrams etc.

Ahh. You beat me to that one. Guitar for Dummies is a great book, as is the rest of the "[Insert subject here] for Dummies" books. I don't know if "The Complete Idiots Guide to [Insert subject here]" has anything on guitar, but they do have a music theory book that explains thing really well, if you ever want to know some more on theory.
