Hi there

I've been playing for a few years now (mostly rock and indie) but now I really want to start playing metal (mostly heavy/thrash). The high action/low gain guitar I have isn't really suited to either of these styles however.

Could anyone suggest a decent metal guitar to start with? I'm looking for something thats gunna last past the 'beginning' stage but priced somewhere below £600 (if there is such a thing). V shaped would be nice (I like V's :D) but if it will really compromise quality then its not essential. Don't care about make/model/origin just want some opinions of guitars to try.

cheers

Heehee, it's kinda funny to recognize the name of a spot I've been to. Considering I was only 3 days in London and still made it my business to take a look down there...

For 600 pounds (spell.?) you can get a pretty good guitar. You can start forgetting the el-cheapo quality worries. Seriously, loosen up and look around at the brands mentioned. You will quite likely find something you like.

ah but don't forget guitars are considerably more expensive in the Uk than in America due to import tax

There are several manufactures who have good metal guitars: Jackson, Ibanez, ESP, Schecter, BC Rich, Dean to name the major ones.

Now, I know Yingwie and Iron Maden folks use Fenders and Zakk Wylde uses Les Pauls and Toni Iommi uses SG's. Even given that, I don't consider those "metal" guitars, IMHO.

OK somebody tell the dummy what in the hell is a metal guitar, is it the looks, the pickups, the paint. I'll assume my Sheraton doesn't qualify which is fine with me but when I show to play with some young guys why couldn't I hang with the headbangers, metal is in the guitar, the amp, the fx, fingers or what?

I think certain guitars lend themselves to metal better than others, not saying others can't be used for metal, but just not the norm when it comes to it. Like I couldn't picture mustaine rippin it up on a Rickenbacker, but it could be done with the right pick-ups I supose. so with that said Jackson, BC Rich, ESP/LTD Dean, Washburn, old Charvels, Kramers and the like make good metal guitars. but its your axe, play what you like......
