Hi everyone. I'm trying to learn guitar. I know I should be learning on an acoustic but all I have at the moment it a Kramer Focus the we had gotten for my g/f's daughter. What I am wondering is this; where is the proper place to start? Learn chords or scales first? I'm seeing that things get pretty complicated with degrees and modes and what not and I'm trying no to let that scare me off! I don't want to be Steve Vai or John Petrucci (though that you be awesome!!!). I'd just like to play songs, maybe improvise some small fills and learn some solo's eventually. Any advice on where to begin?
Thanks

Dan

It's all going to depend on what you want to play. I started with chords, but then I'm strictly a rhythm guy. Starting with chords made it easier to play a whole song, (I sing too...) With time, I was able to do little fills within the chord structure, by moving a finger here or there. I never had the patience for scales, (even when I was just learning wind instruments,) so from my experience I would say it's not necessary. Except, that my brother is well versed in scales and such and I admire the ability to "jam" with anything that's being played.

I know people hate this but... Lessons are the best way to start. You don't have to commit to years of lessons either. Just a few to get you going. Then a few more when you get stuck. Then a few more, etc. I still go for lessons every couple years and get funny looks from the instructors when they hear me play, wondering why I'm there. The fact is that you can learn from EVERYONE even those who don't play as well as you do. If you're wanting to put the effort into learning to play, then put the effort into a few lessons as well. You won't regret it!

Its always good to take lessons, because teacher will have been where you are, and can show you the first steps. when I teach I always start with the enatomy of the guitar, string and note names, tuning, open chords, basic rhythmn and the major scale. if you want to play lead you will need to learn some scales, but this will come later. the guitar is quite easy to learn so that you can play some simple songs, but it's one of the hardest instruments to master, goodluck and enjoy.

Welcome aboard. Lessons are probably your best bet but if you don't feel comfortable with your instructor for any reason find another. There should be plenty around and you will learn faster in an environment that you feel comfortable in. I notice that a lot of people tend to give up if they have a bad experience with a music teacher. The Internet can also be an excellent place to find information. Good luck!

Thanks very much Xark, Rocker & Fred! Yes, I agree lessons would be best, but for now I'm going to have to wing it. I don't really have the extra $$ for lessons. Which will pose problems when I want equipment & supplies!! But I do agree. I have a picture chord book so I'll probably try learning some chords. I'll try some TAB to then I can try actual songs and see if I'm doing it right. Basic scaled will be good for when I'll bored with chords and want to change it up.
I've always been fascinated with good guitar playing regardless of the style. Good is good. But I went drums instead. I'm probably a little old to start off but I have decent rythem. Its just getting the fingers limber enough!
Thanks again guys.
BTW I did find a couple of web sites that seem helpful (if a little technical)

Hello everyone.
As you can see, I'm new here and I want to learn how to play guitar a little better than I can now.
I hope you could help me in some aspects as I "blend in".

Until next time,

Take it from me, you're never too old. Learn a couple of chords that sound good together, find a couple of simple songs that use those chords and before you know it you be asking about jazz scales and modes and nuclear fusion. And maybe you can trade that Kramer for an acoustic.

There is a bunch of DVDs and DVD-ROM stuff out there that you can buy.It will be better than nothing, and they aren't as expensive. Hell, Guitar World puts them out all the time with Andy Alendort. He's a really good instructor. Try that out.

John Petrucci - Rock Discipline. No matter what style you play, that video will help get your hands in shape.

I have Petrucci's video. I highly recommend it, but alas, it's a bit too much for a beginner. But when you're ready to whip your chops in shape, get this vid!

I don't know about being too much. He starts off the exercises slowly enough that after a little bit of practice, even a beginner should be able to do it.

I used to have a Kramer Focus. Man that takes me back!

I agree learn some basic chords, you can find them on line very easily searching google for: "Guitar Chord Charts"

I'll give you some hints on a few you should probably start with...E-A-B , G-C-D

Congrats, and welcome!
