Im shopping for my first guitar, i want an electric. I assumed that tons of people had already asked what a good beginner guitar was so i just read and looked around. But i noticed that nobody recommended esp guitars. Any reason in particular? before i looked on here i was eyeballing an esp and some ibanez guitars. Does esp make crappy gear or what? (any suggestions for others still allowed) I want something easy to learn on, easy to play.

Make it an epiphone. NOT an ibanez. you'll need the practice tuning.

Because all Ibanezes *obviously* have locking tuners, right...?

Sorry dude but you = wrong. There are plenty of Ibanez guitars out there with non-locking systems. In fact, I'd go so far as to say a majority of their instruments DON'T have one (if you could the semi-hollow instruments in there too).

On the other hand, if you like metal and if you get one without a locking tuner, you're going to look at your guitar every day and go "man, if I had spent the extra $X I could have gotten one awesome guitar with a locking tuner and I could play just like my favourite metal bands".

It happened to me...

Many metalheads don't use whammy systems. Although most learners will want one at some point sooner or later.
And what shane said is right. Many Ibanez models don't have whammies and it's wrong to think otherwise.

Actually, I play metal fairly effectively on guitars with hardtails, tune-o-matics, and vintage-style trems. The non-locking tremolos are harder to keep in tune, but if you know how to do it, they stay in tune just fine. Not to mention the fact that (to me) it's easier to change pitch on one mid-song, if one or two of your strings go way out.

My current favorite guitar and the one I'm drooling over at the local store is an Ibanez SAS32EX. It has a 2-point vintage-style tremolo. It stays in tune just fine, thanks to locking tuners. All I'd have to do is keep the nut well-lubed (or replace it with a graphite or roller nut) and I'd be set.

There's no doubt that John Petrucci is an awesome metal guitarist, and he uses a guitar with a non-locking tremolo system.

My bro has an ESP LTD and it beats my Ibanez all around but he paid some more for it. ESP doesn't make crappy guitars but I guess it is not so aggressive about conquering the newbies world like Squire, Epiphone, Ibanez and Yamaha are...
Stay away from beginner guitars. They'll get in the way of your progress sooner or later. Better to shop above $600 ... The only scenario in which you should even look at them is that you're not really sure about wanting to learn the guitar and may give up on it later.

ESP makes some decent gear...but I would recommend a Mexican made Standard Fender Strat. It goes for just over 400$ and will stay with you. It's a great all-around value and makes for a solid base for upgrading later.

I respectfully disagree. You don't have to spend $600 to get a good guitar. Both Ibanez and ESP makes some nice models in the $300-$600 range. BTW, I have an ESP, I love it. Personally, if I were in the market for a 6 string electric, I'd seriously consider a white Ibanez RG350.

To be honest I said $600 to be safe. I got no idea how much guitars actually cost in the States (or elsewhere for that matter). The only thing I know is the price they demand over here and I roughly convert that to $$. So yeah my price suggestion is inflated by shipping costs and import taxes and all that sh*t.

I have an Ibanez RG350DX and it is an AWESOME guitar. I have an ESP F-50 aswell, but the Ibanez is a much better guitar. That being said, the F-50 was much cheaper, but for four hundred, i'm not sure if you could get a better guitar than the 350DX

Hell, set it up right and a Jay Turser can be a good guitar. The ESP LTD's are nice actually, and relatively inexpensive.
Play 'em and see for yourself, dude. If it feels right, and sounds good...

Maybe Zombre knows more about setting guitars up than I do, but I've only had bad experiences with the Jay Turser's I've come across. As for good beginner guitars, other than some of the one's already mentioned, an often overlooked and underrated line are the Yamaha Pacifica's.
