okay, i've been playing about a year now, and i still consider myself basically a beginner just because i have soooooooooooooo much to learn you know? anyway, im pretty embaressed to admit how recently i discovered this, but i just thought that in case any of you out there are like i was and had no clue really, i just found out about this stuff called 'Fast Fret'. basically u put it on ur strings and fretboard and it does a decent job of cleaning away all that gunk and stuff that collects from playing with dirty fingers, and makes it easier to play faster and switch frets smoother. Fast Fret isnt the only thing that will do this, but its what i like to use. hope that was a little useful and not just annoying ;)

or conversely you could just wash your hands before you play and wipe the guitar down when you're done.

It's free. and easy and a good habit to form.

No don't feel bad about pointing out something like this, while most of us are probably aware of it there are always new people coming along and you never know maybe there is even an old hand around here that hasn't been introduced to it.

String Ease.sp?

Same kind of thing though it's not a string cleaner. (Quite honestly, if your strings are that gunked up that you need to clean them, then you should be changing them instead!) This stuff makes them a bit slippery so ease of playing is improved slightly.

I use it in the studio because it cuts down on string squeaks. Once my strings stop squeaking, it's time to change them. But I always go into the studio with new strings.

I'll second the clean hands, and terry cloth wipe down after playing. There's nothing wrong with using fast fret, but wipe down is a great habbit you could get into.

I've been playing for ca. 6 months & consider myself pretty good... but thats because i've played 5 years before a 2 year long break... I've already picked it up again and got better.

"hope that was a little useful and not just annoying ;)": A bit confusing maybe... Strictly to the subject. No. I don't know about that, so thanks for the post. :)

I started using Fast Fret somewhere around '85 or 86. I love it! There's something about either my sweat or just my body chemistry, but I can kill strings in a couple days. With Fast Fret, they feel and sound next to new for a couple weeks. I religiously wash my hands before I ever touch the guitar and just as religiously wipe it off as soon as I set it down. Then a coat of Fast Fret before I tuck it into it's bed. I swear by the stuff, it's kept the fretboard on my 20yr old Peavey looking good and feeling good as well as seriously prolonging my string life.

ya, of course washing your hands is important, Fast Fret should never be considered a replacement for that, but i think its definitely still a good idea for guitar maintenance. also, i live pretty close to the coast, and because of this my strings get messed up faster

i agree with the hand washing theory. i rarely use string cleaner or lubricant. i wish that my playing was so hot that i had to lube the strings to keep from tearing my fingers off, but this is not the case. LOL

for a little while (several years ago) i used some stuff called finger ease. it was a string lubricant but i dont really feel that it helped me, and now that i see the name on my computer screen, it sounds more like something you would buy in the sex shop. hahaha.

................maybe it was, and i just thought it was for guitar. oh, well. all in part of being a dumb youth. or yoot, as "my cousin vinny" would say.

I boil my strings once they start to lose their bite, and when the strings are off, i rub liberal amounts of olive oil (yup, extra virgin) onto the fretboard. It keeps the rosewood nice and . . . um . . . rosewoody.
