I was recently at an out door concert here in Texas, and I over heard some one say that they shouldn't leave the guitars out in the heat like that, what exactly would happen if someone left a guitar in the heat for a long time?

changes in temperature can mess up the truss rod.

Basically what happens is that wood being a living natural material changes its rigidity under different conditions for example, under high temprature wood expands, and contracts in cold conditions, this can warp the neck and cause the paint to crack or the body can become disfigured, this can also cause splits in the joins of the instrument. a guitar may leave a californian factory in perfect playing condition but by the time it reaches antarctica it will need to be set up again because of the shift in temprature and wood expands and contracts.

Once the wood is made into a guitar, it's no longer living ;)

I visited the Martin factory while on vacation and I trying to remember what the Martin Tech told me (I'm old remember) but I believe he said guitars like 40 to 50% humidity. I use to live around Houston and I know damn well those condistions don't exist down there very often.

If you leave it in the sun your finish can fade, and your fingerboard can dry out. Leaving anything in direct sunlight is a bad idea. Having it outside on a nice day is probbly not gonna do anything worth worrying about though, as long as it isn't sitting in the sun all day.

I just thought the effects of the sun on some drunk out in that Texas heat would cause him to make the dumb decision to try to walk off with your guitar.
