My drummer pinched a nerve in his arm helping me move (ouch!). He can't play for a couple of weeks so have to go back to playing with loops, programming or actually play the kit myself in parts...Not a drummer by any means and until his arm is back i'm going to work on some comps. I'll probably use idrum and logic pro but I was wandering what the rest of you use...I can't use Acid Pro because im a mac guy but we have something similar called soundtrack pro...any good suggestions for quick customized songs besides logic? its a bit time consuming (what isn't though right?)

I LOVE the loops that Betamonkey sell. I use 'em pretty much exclusively, also Drums on Demand is cool. And of course, there's always reason...

I have Reason. It sounds as fake as anything I guess, unless you really take a long time to tweak everything... What I mostly dislike though is the sequencer of the drum patterns. It has a rather unreasonable rule about where patterns should start which makes it impossible to combine patterns spanning different number of measures.
Anyway, if you can't play the drums, no software will make up for it. I'd probably make cooler beats sitting in front of a kit than sitting in front of my computer straining my imagination about what might sound natural enough.

I'll second reason. The I agree redrum can be a pain for building realistic patterns, but makes a fantastic filler with one of the quality samples using Dr. Rex.

I don't know about loop monkey, but from what I understand, you should be able to get some really good samples from the gigastudio libraries to work with Logic Pro. But nothing beats a live drummer (except his bandmates, of course) ... =0

Yeah well I was thinking about using a click track and building the parts individually on the drums to make my own loops. I could probably do that, I just do not have the skill set on drums to actually play as well as say well a drummer...Duh.

Anyway I went to that beta monkey loop site and they had some decent stuff recorded by real drummers. You can definately get decent libraries thst can be synced in various time signatures..And they should have feel to a degree because they were played by real players.

Not saying that nothing beats a drummer...that's a fact brother! I'll have to wait almost a month before he can play again! I hear a pinched nerve is pretty serious and his whole right arm is numb...

Guess I'm down with collabs. projects..or write some new tunes. The thing is even if you use loops to match up with a song your writing its still never right you know?

I'll stick with decent loops and make the groove fit as close as I can...I really hate bogging my time down on programming drums...If I had to the from what I'm getting from Reason I guess I'll strick with Logic...Logic has a program inside that's good but it seems if you want that himan feel you'd have to spend hours just building one part of a loop to even get close....just thought maybe someone knew of a program that works better for creating custom drums.

JUST CURIOUS! Do you think this site should sell loops or member's here selling loops...That would be pretty cool huh? Just curious what you think of a feature like that...

Thanks!

If you have a good drum sample in logic, and a good idea of how you want the drums to sound, you can lay a live track playing yourself using your controller as opposed to loops.

I've done this on a few occasions with pretty good results....if it's jazz, start out with a good brush kit and play with a solid bass line and a click. Here's one I did a while ago for a tune I was demoing:

The drums were from a roland JV1080, and sound pretty good. I've done others since with reason (real drum samples) with even better results. It might take you a few takes to get the feel of playing drums. Plus you can break it up by piece and layer it...maybe start with a high hat & snare, and build the part up from there. Your drummer could probably help you out with this with his one good arm, since it will all be done via your controller. The results will definitely sound more human than if you stuck purely with loops. I don't know what you've heard about reason, but you should have it to use with logic anyway...two different animals, and reason integrates with the logic DAW, so you don't have to do your sequence in reason if you don't want to. Reason has made me a lot of money, I'd at least download and check out the demo from propellerheads.

Having a midi keyboard that you can use to "record" can make a huge difference. Programming with mouse-clicks is really a huge pain and it doesn't do justice to the software.

Well I have a keyboard controller but it's not weighted which prefer for creatng cool loops but never used it for drums as a recorder...I was actually going to use my drummer's V-drums and use it in parts...same premise though you know. I can't play drums but I could make loops with layering over parts. That's a great suggestion and the track is pretty nice Sallen. I also agree that the drum sample could be better but it worked fine for that song didn't it?

Man I couldnt imagine amyone using a mouse for creating drums IbzRG unless they were doing step recording which I personally do not see how you can create feel that way...Has anyone create drum loops with step recording method?
