It's not easy to find the time to play the guitar. A full time job, an hour commute each way. a family, a house. I understand the nature of the question but maybe it should be, how in the hell do you find the time to play.

First, I don't believe in "shredding." Music NEEDS space to live and shredders insist on filling EVERY nano-second of a song with 100 additional notes. It's just disgusting and more than annoying. If the music can't breathe, then it's like listening to a cadaver. You don't really hear anything and it stinks to boot.

That being said, I work full time for the old Bell Labs in Denver. On getting home there's the typical stuff to handle plus the studio, (though it hasn't been very busy lately that will change in about a month.)

So when I'm not "shredding," (which is ALWAYS,) I'm living.

And Hippieway is right. Finding the time to play is always more difficult that knowing what to do when you're not playing.

Sometimes life just plain interrupts. I currently have gout in my right hand. It's getting better now, but for a day or so there was no way to hold this hand so that it wouldn't hurt. I was able to play a little this morning around 2am. I usually go to bed between 4 to 5am. This gout thing is a new experience for me. It felt like broken glass was packed into the joints of my hand. Getting older sucks, but it beats the alternative!

Your comment reminds me of the old Xerox advertisements .... with the dude who spoke faster than the ear could hear, remember ?

It (shredding) might appear 'cool' if you want to show-off to folks (who don't get it) .... or think it will help you get laid by a teeny-blond. Or maybe you got-chops but no soul ... and that's all you've got to share ??

I know this forum is host to many youngsters (I am older than mac-and-cheese) ... and I would urge them to not fall-prey to the guitar-mag / trendy / currently-cool / flavor-of-the-day ... crap. Crap ... is crap at any speed.

On the other hand .... the players with speed who really make MUSIC, -- do indeed amaze. Maybe because my hands just aren't built for it ?

As the X-man suggests .. the thread could simply be 'what are you doing when you're not playing', right ? And the answer could be:

"I am criticizing people who post on guitar.com" ..... and trying to sound like a wise-old geezer. :-)

LOL... Yes, some of us will jump at the opportunity. It's not personal in any way, just sayin'...

Playing something FAST is OK in context, but doing it all the time is just plain, boring. (My opinion.)

However, people like different things so it's all good to someone out there!

As far as dcunning30 is concerned. He's just a show-off. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

All I do is shred. When I'm done shredding, I shred some more. I take songs and fill up every nano-second with a blissful flurry of high-gain notes! You may now genuflect before my guitar greatness!

Don't feel bad pinsone, but some kids on here play for hours, take a nap, get up play on the computer, play guitar a little more, text message their friends, kill a couple of hours watching TV and complain about being bored.
There are others on here that work all day at a job, got a wife, kids, pets that all want their attention before they go to their second job.
So and this will be important in a lot of situations Know your audience
