I for myself never played one, so I can´t comment on playing feel, sound, technique... The only thing I can say is that the idea of ANOTHER string is simply cool. On the other hand, most of the stuff can be played on a 6-string. It seems to me that 8-strings are used for specific styles only, and I fully ignore which!
Cheers!

I think that it would absolutely rock for playing fingerstyle, Tuck Andress style or Ben Lacey. Ibanez and Conklin...

The question belies, where are those extra strings going, above the high E or below the low E, or a combination of the two. Charlie Hunter's 8 string guitar has 5 guitar strings and 3 bass strings, so you can figure out how it's played. Heck, when I play my 7 string guitar, when I'm riffing on the low B string, I have to make sure I'm not getting in the way of the bass player. When Charlie Hunter plays his 8 string guitar, he is the bass player.

I have never personally played an 8.

Pro: 1 more string

Con:The fretboard has got to be the width of a highway.
You also get in the way of the bass player.(as stated before).

Possible con:finding an amp to handle the low end.

my opinion on anything more than 6 strings is ... well vai, satriani, and petrucci do some pretty nice stuff on it, but otherwise i hate 7's, and 8's are even worse. if you want that much low end, why not just play bass? Any modern Metal guitarist with a 7 or 8 string sounds horrible to me. They need ot lean how to play 6, before they can play 7 or 8 most of the time. However there are always exceptions. If you can really play an 8 to its full potential, then go for it. I would personally love to hear someone actually use it, instead of playing some god awful riffs.

I think you'd have to be clever. If you had a bassist, you'd almost need to work out cunterpoint lines with him/her. If you had no bassist, you'd need to play like a bassist and guitarist simultaneously. It'd be cool if you could separate the output of the strings....

It might be possible to use some sort of crossover system and bi-amp it, between a standard guitar amp and perhaps a bass amp with a little bit of hair to it...

then again, maybe I'm just crazy.

If you're interested in gear for 8-string playing, here's Charlie Hunter's. He has a seperate pu for the bass strings as the guitar strings. As a result, he plays through a guitar amp as well as a bass amp simultaneously.

I was in SamAsh yesterday, and I got my grubby little hands on a brand new Ibanez 8 string guitar. It's so new, it's not yet on the Ibanez site, but you can see it here. I absolutely loved it. But, you gotta consider what to do with the bass player if you're going to play one of these puppies!

The link points to a 7 string... You gotta clicky a bit to get to the 8er...

The fretboard is absolutely huge... Looks kinda funny. Not sure I got any use for that. If I want to play low, I pick up the 5-string bass that stands right next to my 6-string guitar. Kick in some distortion if I want to. And it goes well below any 8 string guitmo.

8 strings means someone is either trying to push the bassist out of the band or has picked up the wrong instrument XP

Don't hate on it until you played on it. My thoughts, I always like choices. My 7-string guitars give me choices, an 8 string guitar would give me more choices. The sort of experimentating I was doing at the store was fascinating to me. Consider the possibilities. I'm fully aware of the potential for conflict with the bass player. Nobody every said you must use all 8 strings, but having that extra string there to try something new is pretty cool.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm a bedroom player. That means I got no bassist to worry about... I'm sure I'd enjoy the hell out of the lows of it :)

Then again... I hardly ever touch the B string on my bass (other than to rest my fingers playing the E) but I'd buy a 5string again over any 4string without second thought.
