Ladies and Gents - we are now in testing mode of a new version of Guitar.com. If you've been following Jim D's blog on the homepage, you may have already been aware that this was coming. Our effort has been to bring back some of the value that had been extracted from the site. We unearthed the old Guitar.com video interviews as well as some of the text lessons, columns, features, etc. We've also started working on some new content, columns and other benefits for our users that we hope you'll find of value in the not-too-distant future.

Primarily, we wanted to give the new visitors, as well as the old ones, something to view within the context of the site. We're partnering with some companies to also add some new content and features to the site. Please understand that this is a process. We hope that you'll contribute to this process in the way of ideas, fixes and constructive criticism. We encourage your feedback and critique. Change on Guitar.com has never been easy so please be patient. We'll do our best to listen to what you have to say while at the same time, doing our best to achieve our business objectives.

When we launch the site in Beta, we're going to be running the New site and this current site in parallel. This way, you can still use the current discussion forums and also begin to peruse the new site. We will have to update this forum at some point as well but, we haven't come to consensus on this as of yet. We'll certainly let you know which direction we're headed in, in this regard, real soon.

So, give us a few more days and we'll let you know when we're going to pull the trigger. If you want to send me a note with your thoughts or concerns - send them to info@guitar.com and I'll get back to you. We plan on having a homepage blog on the new site where several of us will keep you up-to-date on what's coming, what new features we're working on and the like. In the meantime, have a great week and we look forward to hearing from you!!

if change means making the site more fun as well as adding some very usefull resources for information, I'm open to that.

I mean after all, just like in most musical genre's, if there is no progress to keep it interesting then things become stagnent.

It'll take some time but we've got some very interesting plans. The first round will start with this new version. We'll have a link to it on the home page next week. Then we'll get to work at the phase II part of the program. Hopefully, that will include feedback from users, new ideas generated from the discussions created in the new space plus working with new partners to bring value to the site. It's exciting stuff and we're glad you guys are open to it. Looking forward to hearing from you

I only ever use the forum but I have been reading Insider's blog. To me the timetable doesn't matter - I was planning to keep playing till the day I die anyway. I tried for a month to check the new members every day and PM them, inviting them to say hello on a "Newbies" thread. The main thing I learnt was that there are hundreds of them who never say anything, so I assume they are using the Lessons and other aspects of the site. Are you incorporating traffic counters into different parts of the site?

Do we lose our webcred?!

Haha. Just kidding.

I really love the community on this site. And if it gives better resources, tools and stuff, then I'll practically live my life here.

The "Education" section is really good, btw. Thanks for putting it up.

I love that Illustration Farlow!

The only thing I can think of as far as a suggestion, and this may not be possible, or at least right now, is a Soundclick type thing at this site. Something we can use for our recordings and collaborations without leaving the site. I don't care about the creds, but I'm hoping we can still post jpegs to our comments. I feel they add a certain panache to our posts, sexist bastard though I may be.

Those are all good ideas and many of them have been on the consideration page - a collaboration interface for all users to make music, lessons, the Manufacturers forum is a great idea and one we'll look into shortly - lots of good ideas and we appreciate those thoughts.

Hate to keep throwing ideas in but please set the forum font so that we can post tabs. I've seen a few java apps out there that allow you to click a fretboard to make tabs. http://www.hotfrets.com/tabwriter.asp for example.

I envision a virtual fretboard above the dialogue box where you type your message so that you can click in tabbed riffs and post directly to the forum. That would be cool!

I'd say there were at least a half a dozen instances where i got email from g.com users asking for tabs to the tunes i posted. i actually started to use powertab to tab out a lot of my stuff. it would be cool to have a tab archive of songs created by users or perhaps each user could have a tab section in their public profile. powertab & guitar pro would be great!

side note: misc did a thing in midi that i imported into powertab and edited it they way i wanted it and then i imported it into Reason and just had a ton of fun with it.

Monospaced fonts are so passe. No visitor would take the forum seriously if the font was monospaced. However I think at least the ability to select between two fonts (one default and one for tabs) would do the trick adequately. Like in some tech forums there is a tag called 'code' so that the text between these tags appears in courier new and they use this to post scripts and other code in their posts.
If down the road the dev' team further wants to expand this into funky hightech flash functionalities, that's fine too.

This 'beta' concept is laughable. The last 5-6 years have been 'beta' for g.com! Just build a cool website and launch it already... If it's cool, people will go after it. If it's a shallow, pathetic attempt to deceive us into a false sense of self supplied community we'll either fall for it or we wont.

If you tank it this time (ie nosedive into abysmal, epic failure) can I have the guitar.com domain name? I promise I'd make it cool...

Hmmm, i used to like Zombre - This current site was being developed by a new company. Never made it past "beta" - If you read the first post - you'll note that we're going back to the drawing board of sorts.

Het - good idea. We're talking to various tab prospects. The licensing is the lynchpin. Without it, you catch grave noise here in the US. That's why there's plenty of tabs site based everywhere BUT the US. Keep the ideas coming - we'll address them as we can. First things first - put up the site so that it has some content on it - it's searchable and then start to build upon the ideas. What for the link manana.

Just because you can't post copy protected tab's doesn't mean that all Tabs are evil.
We do a fair amount of collabs around here. It would be nice to be able to show how to play something or.... how you did something... or whatever in a simple click and post kind of way.

Tab is the written language guitar players use to communicate. I totally hate doing a video and saying 13th fret on the b string hammer on to the 15th fret on the b string.... It's so confusing... and tedious.

The ability to put TAB into forum is my only real complaint about this site. Actually, it's the only real improvement I will be looking forward to with the new site. I will be sad if it doesn't happen...

Ok,

I believe Jeff and Hetjr are right in the sense that having a Tab editor would be a great idea.We aren't stealing anything, were GIVING something. Its use would be to let the members who do the collabs, as Jeff pointed out, a chance to put the ideas across for those who like to use tablature.

Were not ripping off artists, y'know like Hal Leonard does. We are posting our own work, which last time I looked was extremely legal, for others to use by way of a lesson or transcription of our tracks. I have done a few on here, and it was a right royal pain in the scrotum. A tab editor would be beneficial for those that contribute in such a way.

Secondly, I agree with Zombre and Farlow on respective viewpoints.......just make it work. At the end of the day it will see traffic or it wont. And if you take my advice, which is always optional, make it simple and user friendly. If you start fucking around with additions and gimmicks and stuff that has limited appeal and use, then the site will be the elephant in the room. You know its there but no-one mentions it.

Guitar players are an easy bunch to please, lets face it look at Motorhead. But we play guitar, internet site or no internet site. The only reason I use G.com is to chat with the guys, sort out collabs, post the songs that I put on iComp for them to give me grief over, and sometimes get some advice. Oh, and have the odd disagreement but its human nature and I for one dont give a rats ass.

Anyway. I hope it works, I do. But if it doesn't then start asking questions of those that put it together. Members come and go, members can be faithful, members talk openly, agree, disagree, argue, help, support, advise, teach, learn, respect, compliment, criticize, bicker, whatever!!
But at the end of the day they all share a passion for playing guitar, and if the site helps provide something for them to share that passion with the instrument of choice, then mission accomplished.

If not I'm starting up a Posse.....

It has been my gripe that other guitar sites become too self important with too many pop ups constantly, or the tabs suck, or the One thing I would like to see is an advertisement that doesn't already stream a video. If I want to watch a vid I will click on it. I stopped going to Gamer sited because they have to many moving parts and it weighs down even a respectable computer, let alone an average schmoe like me.

It does not have to be aesthetically pleasing. Functionality is key. Most of the people who post are guys. Ocasionally we have a lady, but look on every post. Maybe one girl to 50 guys? It can look cool, but don't make that the priority. I agree about the tabs. I want to see, when I do watch a vid what they are doing.

I don't think the new site is going be bad. I trust that it's in the right hands with realistic goals this time. Otherwise it would mean that the owners didn't learn from past failures and I have trouble believing that for a company of the magnitude of DAddario.

I do have to agree with the main ideas recently mentioned, especially functionality. Easy and fast access to all the basic and most used stuff. Fancy gimmicks are cool but they get old fast and then they just waste our time, so save them for less used stuff. And any high- or low- tech way to post tabs that don't get completely destroyed by the forum font will keep us happy. We're gonna post tabs anyway, so it might as well be made easy.

Oh! and I'd love to see a cool new logo/banner! I kinda like the splashy G although it's a bit generic, but the rest of the logo is lame. We're posers at heart, we need a logo to match this.

agreed. i think the best way to approach this whole thing is to make a simple & straight forward "core site" consisting of all the old content, GOOD forum design, and good profile pages.

i cannot stress enough how a well designed profile page should be. g.com once had an AMAZING profile page (for its time) way back in the day.

we do NOT need: chat rooms, video adverts, anything like rype.

The thing with rype the way I undestand it is that it would have been actually an application. As such it would exist outside the site. So I simply don't fucking get it. What was the point of rype if it would be separate from the site and have its own community tools? Keep us AWAY from the site? It's why the previous guys didn't put much thought or effort into the site. They weren't planning on using it for much except pitching their product.

I think something that would be cool is to add a section where gear is reviewed... yes, there is already a gear section with recommendations from users and many of us post user reviews of gear we've bought or had an opportunity to really sit down and tinker with... but how about some professionally done reviews.

and I'd say if you use that suggestion although video reviews are good because we can hear and see what's happening also give us the choice of a text based article too - I say this because I'm often on the site at work where I have no audio (there's enough noise from the endless chatter in a call center without someone adding noise from video and soundclips to the mix).

Also, although there is already an articles section where you can learn tons of stuff if you take the time to sift through it and find something that interests you; make it easier to find. Categorize the articles so you can go straight to the subject your interested in and can bypass what's not about that general subject.

I remember the old G.com had interviews with artists and professional guitar tech's (I seem to remember once reading something with Joe Satriani's tech back in the old site) or other music industry professionals. It can be tutorial stuff along the lines of what I've mostly seen in the article section here or it could be something like, say, a professional musician sharing stories about the ups and downs of being on tour and what they went through to get to where they are today, in depth studies of the gear a guitarist used to get that elusive sound and the settings that will get you close.

"Something I also remember from the old G.com that was great too was interviews with people in the music industry (artists, agents, managers, lawyers, guitar techs, etc.)"

I have wondered about having forums with the guys in the industry. Being able to talks shop with actual major label groups, or professional signed artists, or just to shoot the shit with some of the greats. I know there are plenty of D'Adarrio users in the biz. Not that I expect it, it would be nice though.

It's true, there's tons of artists, some endorsed and many that aren't, who use D'Addario strings and it'd be great to have a chance to ask some questions that would help out someone else.

I bet some of them have some pretty entertaining stories from the road too. For example, I'm sure someone like Angus and Malcom Young, or Dave Mustaine must have some interesting stories about things that happened to them on tour.

I do remember reading about a story where Mustaine came into his dressing room one time to find some kid who'd snuck into the backstage area playing one of his guitars...given Mustaines rep for being a hot head, you can imagine his reaction, justified as it may have been...I bet he made that kid crap his pants. LOL
