I own a Danelectro Fab Tone and, despite its appearance, it is a very metal pedal with alot of gain. I would recommend it.

death metal pedal,huh?....certainly one of the worst pedals i have ever played thru.... you will tire of that thing very quickly....sounds decent at low volume in the bedroom...but....once you turn up the volume ,you will see right away it's limitations. it's just too buzzy....virtually useless in a band setting. your sound will disappear as soon as you step on it......the mxr zakk wylde pedal is pretty decent as is any of the marshall guv'ner boxes.....

The Death Metal pedal isn't necessarily bad my 2nd guitarist uses one. But it does have a buzz so thats why you get a Roctrun Hush and use the noise gate and it all depends on your setup and amp that you have...If you have a stack then you could put the volume knob on like 2 or 3 maybe 4 and turn up the output level a bit and It'll be fine...unless you are going to gig around and crank your amp up then I suggest a power amp like a VHT 2502 or an Engel 840/50 but thats only if you are a serious enough musician and going to dedicate yourself and make career in the future...I mean why buy all this expensive equipment if your just going to mess around for a little while? Anyway, I suggest a Digitech Metal Master ( which by the way has a cool MORPH knob on it that is kinda like a little affect thingy) or a BOSS ds-1 distortion pedal I have used both and I liked them give them a try and see what you think. Also if you want to have a clean sound that has a lot of crunch to it you could try getting yourself a Lee Jackson GP-1000, It's an old 80's model pre-amp but its really nice zakk wylde uses one thats why he gets his crazy sound and so does Alexi from children of bodom and I think John Petrucci uses one to but yeah you might want to check that out too if you'd like. Well hope that helps.

Try the Boss MT-2 Metalzone. It's really a great pedal if you want something that can give you a great distorted sound and do other stuff too.

Since I am blissfully ignorant of the difference between true bypass and whatever the alternative is, I can only recommend what I know. Good luck finding the right pedal for you.

true bypass means the tone isn't affected when the effect pedal is off. true bypass, while nice, is overrated. some pedal makers don't use true bypass for various reasons (ive been out of the effect pedals scene for too long and i don't remember why). a lot of non true bypass pedals sound just fine. i wouldn't flat out disregard any pedal on the sole reason of it not being true bypass. i would take it for a test drive and decide then.

with that being said, we can't really tell you what to get- you're going to have to go out and try a shit ton of pedals yourself. the fabtone and metal zone are good places to start. digitech has several "metal" distortion pedals, and mxr supposedly has a nice one. i'd stay away from the marshall jackhammer though. it's too bassy, even with the bass at zero.

Robert Keeley makes a mod version of the Boss MT-2 that sounds AMAZING. I believe he also re-wires it to be true bypass...

If you want to get propper Pantera distortion get the Krank Distortous Maximus (its not a joke thats the real name). It was created by Krank to sound like Dime's Krank amp. You will not get a better stomp box.
