Hi, I'm looking to buy either the Epiphone beginner pack or the Squier beginner pack. I've checked both out on youtube and such, but I can't come to a decision. Really only interested in the "blues" sorta sound right now, which guitar would be better at producing that style of sound? Also quality-wise, which is better? I have heard a few people say the Epiphone one is better because the strings are set up easier for beginners, but the amp in the Squier pack is much, much better. Just my main concerns are creating the sound I want and ease of play. Thanks.

Either one is close to the same. It just depends on the type of blues sound you're going for. Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc all use strats. Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Gary Moore all used Les Pauls like your Epiphone pack.

I'd try to play both of them before coming to a decision.

I find that the low end epis are way better than the low end squires. An epi will also hold it's value better than a squire. I think the epi amps are good enough to get started with - some of the epi packs come with a tube amp and some of the squires come with a digital modeling amp. The VERY cheapest packs around the $200 dollar mark are probbly not worth the money when stepping up to $250 gets you either the fender frontman amp or the epi studio 15r - neither are wicked amps, but they're way better than the other [lower-priced] packages.

the epi also comes with humbucker pickups which are generally much quieter than the single coils of a strat.....

And Epi makes a SWEET 5w tube amp. Don't be fooled by the 5w. It pushes 115db through a 4x12. For about $150 you can't touch it with ANYTHING in a comparable price range. I know it's more money, but it's a FAR better amp than comes in those starter packs. I'd buy the guitar and amp separately and spend a few more bucks, just to get something MUCH better than the manufacturers idea of a starter set.

i very much prefer epiphone to squier. all the squiers i have played felt cheap and were very noisy and tinny ( not tiny ) sounding. but hey thats just my opinion.
