Well, people tend to either be Strat or Les Paul apologists and lean one way or the other. I've also never heard anyone say that Fenders are the best guitars you can buy. PRS seems to hold that title. However, I have heard people say the strat is the best guitar design. Those people tend to say the tonal range is more versatile than the Gibson. I'll play anything, but I had to play a gig and my life depended on it, I'd choose a strat (style) guitar just because I'm accustomed to it.

i simply can't stand the 60 cycle hum you get from strats....give me humbuckers all day long over those crappy single coils. i'm in the les paul camp. strats just always kinda feel like toys to me. but i have played a few that were ok. i DO like the superstrats(with the humbuckers).....

Here in Chicago we have people who root for the White Sox ... some for the Cubs.

Personally, I think baseball is moronic ... but the point is--- it is more than just a Les Paul or Stratocaster world. I don't call baseball fans dumb -- or even bother telling them about real athletics. No good would come of it and I would just make more of an idiot out of myself.

If they like baseball (even if it is a Cub fan) ... that's cool with me. As the magnificent poet (sarcasm)Ray Stevens said in song :

"Everything is beautiful .. in it's own way ........ "

So .. feel-the-love my brothers -- and play nicely with each other. Personally, I have a 64' Strat/rosewood .. a LP copy (it IS a jazz guitar .. just ask Les Paul) and that big-ass hollow-body archtop that's my avatar. They are all uniquely wonderful 'toys'.

Even if it's a Cubs fan?

You must be a south-sider!

The stratocaster is a guitar that allows you to develop your own style because it doesn't have effects or anything.
That's the way it is.

All I know is that my Tele is my favorite electric that I own. Fender is certainly not the best guitar you can buy but is reliable, usable, professional, and versatile

Fenders not for metal? Dave Murray of Iron Maiden has been playing Strats his entire career...ditto Janick Gers. Hell, I've been playing Strats since I began playing all those years ago :P I think Fenders are somewehat more versatile than LP's, but I do have to say this: It's not so much the guitar you play, it's what you can do with it.

I fall in the LP column as well. That being said, I have an American Tele and plan to buy a Strat next.

IMHO, probably the most versatile guitar you could get would be a fat strat with a floyd.

A guitar is a guitar with few exceptions. You can find great Fenders, great Gibsons, great PRS's, great Ibanez... You can also find many POS guitars made by the same manufacturers. Each guitar is an individual, just like you and me. They can be great or they can have hidden problems, (though none of them has ever been a serial killer,) or they can be crap right from the start. Finding the right guitar is like finding the right woman. You can get lucky from the start, or you can spend a lot of years looking for the perfect fit. The advantage is that when you decide you need a new guitar, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to divorce it. It doesn't complain and doesn't want alimony. And shopping for a new ax is a LOT cheaper than shopping for a new partner!

A guitar doesn't have a mouth, it never says no, and it doesn't quit until the job is done.

It doesn't swallow either. But that's the only drawback I can think of.
