Name some movies that have really cool music as part of the movie and not just the soundtrack. I find that if the movie has great music in it, I'll give it way more love even if it happens to be a crappy movie. Everybody knows Spinal Tap and Crossroads, etc., here's some more I like:

-Eddie and the Cruisers 2: Not the greatest movie, but the music in it is the best I've seen. There's scenes of jamming, practicing, and all types of stuff. One of my favorites.
-Back to the future: I broke the rewind button on my VCR trying to cop the Johnny B Goode solo many moons ago.
-La Bamba: great music, Brian Setzer, and a great movie to boot, "WHo wants to buy a kilo!"
-Rockstar: Mark Wahlberg really kicks a@@ in the right role.

Others that were not so great:

The Doors: Slow, blurry, and boring
Bird: I love Charlie Parker but I thought the movie was so ... unengrossing and the music wasn't enough to save it.

I thinks Jeff Healy was in Roadhouse but I don't remember how much music there was...

If you are talking about movies about music I agree The Commitments is great but if you want strange little movies with interesting music that are just good sound tracks I though Big Empty was pretty good. And of course we can't even have this discussion without a nod to O Brother Where Art Thou. Movies have finally started to put some really good sound tracks together this post should attract a lot of attention.

As a kid my mother used to buy the soundtracks to so many movies because the capture a mood and appeal to a target market so I have always payed attention to the music in movies.

My really odd list:
Harold and Maude, full soundtrack by Cat Stephens (Yusef Islam)
10 Things I Hate About You
Wayne's World
The Wedding Singer
...adding '8 Mile' not a guitar movie but I loved the building of the song by overlaying tracks as the story progressed.

I have to agree on the Back to the Future movie, I was disappointed it was dropped in the sequels, but there were so many reasons to be disappointed in the sequels.

My wife dragged me to this one," Love Actually", but it had some really funny moments in it from Bill Nighy. He plays a washed up rock star named Billy Mack. This guy is hysterical.

The Last Waltz
Probably not the kind of movie you think of as a movie, but it is.
Irregardless, some real fine music to be sure.

I'd throw in Rude Boy if you're a Clash fan. Other than the pathetic hang about that is the "lead" character (and a poor actor) the pic has some amazing Clash footage of their early classics. The only down side is that the band comes off as wanna be rock stars/tough guys with politically driven attitudes. Personal disclaimer: I never liked the band after their 2nd album, but this movie only features songs from "The Clash" and "Give Em Enough Rope", if memory serves me.
