I have been looking at going to guitar luthiering school after I graduate from college with a business management major (I want to open my own guitar shop). My step dad did bring up a good point that an open sign just wont bring in the customers but a good reputation will. So I was thinking that being a guitar tech for someone for a few years wolud increase my reputation, but Im not sure of the qualifications that are necessary for that, and if anyone knows how to get into that ring. By the way if anyone knows of good luthiering school post it on here, Im looking at one in Georgia called John Marshalls Luthiering International, but its like an 11 week course. So any ideas are welcome.

Well... If you are trying to land a tech spot with a "known" touring band it's a damned if you do damned if you don't thing.

ALL the guys I know that are out among 'em are not about to take a chance on someone they don't know and has NO rep. Generally they
do their best to talk guys that have done superior work for them in the past (repairs, etc) into going out with them. I believe your best bet would be to find a local guitar store and see if you can take some of the repair work for them. Reputations are hard to build when nobody knows you or your work.

Good Luck

Buy a luthier and their reputation. Seriously, you know the product, you are trying to build a business. Stop trying to be EVERYTHING and hire somebody in to be the expert in something. You will learn from them while they are in the shop and you can concentrate on:
Running the business
Product offerings
Providing lessons

This is one of the biggest things I learned from trying to start a few businesses, I am no longer looking at being everything in the business, I need good people to do what I am average at so I can do what I am good at.
