I'm looking for a Les Paul or Les Paul style guitar in the
$500 range. I'm leaning towards a Epi Les Paul Standard but now I'm debating the Hagstrom Swede or some of the stuff from Agile. What do you all think is the superior guitar for the money? Any suggestions would be cool too. Thanks

Have never played a Hagstrom before but hear they are incredible guitars. I do have an '96 Epiphone LP Standard and love it! Got the Epi for $275.00 (USD) in excellent condition. You may also want to look into a used Brian Moore i2 Guitar that is an LP style that sounds and plays beautifully. Has those nice warm tones like a Les Paul and alot lighter.

Hagstom are excellent guitars in all aspects , great players , great price and value and here at least you get a hard shell case with purchase .The Swede is a little different in shape , sort of like a Les Paul on steroids . I Have a Gibson LP Custom and have no complaints but it is a lot more money of course . I have been looking at the Epi 56 gold top LP as I cant even think of the getting real thing , and have nothing bad to say about the Epiphone's . I like the feel of the Hagstrom's better but the Epi is closer in looks and feel to a Gibson LP . The Hagstom is great sounding and again in My opinion more guitar for the money .Remember though you have to get the one that feels right for you.

If you're going after an Epi Les Paul, may I make two suggestions:
1) Try out quite a few. Like the Mexican Fenders, they can be hit and miss as far as quality goes. I tried around 15 Epis before I found a LP that seemed to be made by someone who cared.
2) Replace the pickups. They're sub-par by any standard and once you get the right ones in your whole attitude will change. I had an Epi Les Paul for years with Seymour Duncan pickups in it that I loved quite dearly until I found a used Gibson Les Paul Special with Duncans in it. The price was right and it was definitely a step up. If you can't afford the real deal the Epi will do you fine with a pickup swap.
