Yeah, I know it's a weird title, so sue me. It's the only fitting thing I could think of :-P

For the longest time, I've been extoling the virtues of the Ibanez ART400 on this website, and indeed it is an awesome instrument. But tonight I decided to visit one of those infamous chain stores, and they had the lesser cousin, the ART300 on the shelf. I used to think those things were ugly with their alligator-skin finish. But, after seeing it up close, it's really just downright cool and not ugly in the slightest.

Just thought I'd let y'all know ;)

Often the distance at which you look at any given object will determine it's aesthetics. A tattoo for example, regardless of how you may feel about tattoos, often looks better up close than at a distance. The lines become more distinctive as you get closer. At a distance it can look more like a blue and red blob.

While I like to think that the finish on a guitar doesn't matter, I know that certain looks appeal more than others, in fact some are just so not me that while they may be the best guitar around but I would never know it because I would probably not even pick them up to find out. As far as the ART-300 goes I assume the finish is smooth and it is just the appearance of roughness, I am a wood guy I like to see the grain not a picture of whatever, that being said I've seen much worse than this Ibanez.

I finally have to speak up and say that I do not understand the appeal of Ibanez guitars. Sorry, I have never played an Ibanez I liked. That flat fingerboard with wide string spacing isn't comfortable.

Please explain the appeal. Lotsa cats on this site talk about them nonstop.

You think it's not comfortable, I think it's wonderful.

The appeal would be that they are well built, great designs, smaller fretboards, for us little hand people, and also they always look somewhat unique. There are hardly any of them that are the same. I can't say that for fender. You pick one up and usually you can pick up another that looks almost the exact same. THe only way to get something different from them is to customize, which costs your car payment for a couple of years. Now one of these days I will be going and finding that perfect PRS guitars, but for now, I will stick with the Ibanez, and who knows, maybe I'll just stick with the Ibanez guitars. They make models for the descerning musician. And they usually are from about $850-1500 dollars. The Presige models are sweet.

There is a review if this guitar in the new Guitar World. The guy says that the scalloped top actually resonates very well, and the body of the guitar has some sweet tones, with the actve pick ups, which run on AA batteries instead of the usual 9volt. I want to try one, simply because I love Ibanez's innovation. They always try and push the envelope, and make something unique. I also want to try their new Montage guitar. It's very similar to the Taylor acoustic electric, but it is larger in body.

Honestly, I wasn't too impressed with the pickups. they were very sterile and dry sounding to my ears. Just to make sure it wasn't the amp I picked up a Les Paul nearby and it sounded like you'd expect.

I also am not into ibanez... I find that their necks feel like toys - however I admit they are very nice and comfortable, and really help playing fast. I guess I just need a good chunk of wood in my hands, like the 1959' les paul profile neck on my flying V... feels like you are playing up on a baseball bat. I have a buddy who really loves ibanez, and I play his guitars alot, but I just dont "feel it" the way I do with my gibsons.
