I agree Jimi was special but what does setting fire to his guitar and then beating it to death have to do with it, other than prove he could afford another one.

I think he could not afford another one, he was hot very wealthy. He did that because of his personality, not to show that he can burn a guitar. He was just feeling comfortable on-stage.

The thing I love about Jimi, especially if you watch Woodstock, is he never played a song exactly the same. That is one thing I don't like about a lot of bands now a days. They are just cover bands for their own CDs.

Setting his guitar on fire got him allot of attention.

I think it payed off for him in the long run but I have no interest in burning up my guitars.

I wonder if we can talk C.C. into lighting his hair on fire. The best of both worlds.

To me Hendrix was great because nobody, and I mean nobody ever played anything like that before! It was like the guy stepped off a UFO or something and laid down the blueprint for the way guitar oriented rock would be played for the next forty years. He set the bar for the modern day lead guitarist. He was burning up the fretboard and diving on that whammy way back in 67' probably even earlier. To me Hendrix was a pure innovator. You had bands like Mountain, and Cream, but none of them did what he did. He learned the rules and then had fun breaking every one of them. Had he lived, he probably would have invented hammering. Lord knows he did everything else. And if Hendrix sounds dated, remember, he didn't have access to the equipment people had just a few years after he died.

I could not agree more! Hendrix put the word electric in electric guitar. He is the highest of the high priests in the church of the sonic guitar. Few players in rock's glorious history have combined such monster skills, touch, tone, and technique with all out sonic assault. 30+ years after his death I am still humbled by his work.

Now we are getting somewhere, If you were to set your pink hair on fire using your Strat as a match then you would be the best. Yes?

Burn two, Yes only two, guitars years apart and that makes you the "best".

hendrix has never been a favorite for me, however i do agree he was good. as far as setting the guitar on fire, it was an attention getter, and it worked well for that purpose. jerry lee lewis once set a piano on fire. he wanted to close the show, but instead he had to play ahead of chuck berry. he set his piano on fire at the end of his set. the crowd went crazy and he said " follow that, killer "

"Id say it's Jimi Hendix, because he was the first guitarist to do the national anthem on guitar, also because he invented the playing the guitar with your mouth."
