Hey. I play a lot of funk, which uses muted strings, and I've got a pretty cool riff I've come up with, the only problem is It's on the 12th, so all the dead notes I'm trying to make just come out as harmonics. Is there any way to stop them ringing so they're just normal muted strings, or am I gonna have to work around it?

Use all 4 fingers to mute the strings. That should kill the harmonics. Try spacing the fingers farther apart if the harmonics still bleed through.

Put a capo on the 2nd Fret. The harmonics will be on 14th, instead os 12th...

+1 to both of you for trying to help. But to Rui, I don't have a capo, and it uses an F barre during the chorus, so I doubt it'd work.

To ibz, that's kinda worked, there's still some minor ringing from the thumb over, but it's not too noticeable. I'll play around and see what happens. Thanks!

push down a little harder on the string so the harmonic doesnt really come through. that might work, instead of just laying your hand on the string. or try palm muting it as well.

Palm muting assistance is a good idea.
Pressing down won't help much I think. The 12th fret harmonic is the most lively, most easy and most forgiving harmonic spot. You may reduce the sustain significantly by pressing more but you won't kill it entirely.

When you use all of your fingers don't center them symmetrically onto the 12th fret. Try to be offset, like having the index near/over the 12th and the other three farther away. The more distance you cover away from the harmonic spot the better you'll kill the harmonics.
