ok, so I've had a digitech rp50 for like 5 years now, and I'm gigging more and more, so I'm looking to use my part of my tax refund to upgrade. I've really been looking at the line6 pod or floor pod, I'm just curious if anyone here has any feedback about either of those, or thinks I could to better in that same price range (around $200)?

I got the simple POD2.0 .

It's a nice tool, but it can hardly qualify as a multiFX unit. A floorPOD may be better suited for your purpose, but what the simple PODs are good for is modelling amp tones. Their choice of FX is limited and the choice of FX combos even more. But if you are more concerned about altering your tone properties than using a wide arsenal of effects, then at least try them.

The PODxt is much better equipped, with loads of FX and freedom of combinations. But still not a floor unit.

I do think there is some sort of footswitch board for the non-floor units (that goes separately), and they all certainly can be controlled via MIDI, if you care to go that far.

I'd say, save up until you can get a BOSS GT6 or 8 or a PODxt Live if you want a big nice uber-versatile unit.

I too have a POD, but the first generation, and I just use when I'm getting into pre-production for new material.

If your looking for versatility with effect combinations I would research further other floor units. You'll probably spend a bit more but you'll be sitting pretty in the long run. As far as staying within budget, and I haven't used one, is the Toneworks AX1500-G. They're 5 cents shy of $200 and has a good number of effects to work with.

if you like the digitech, you could try to find a GNX1 or 2 for around 200. What do you plan on using for effects? If not a lot of effects then a pod 2.0 or floor pod or floor pod plus will work for ya and sound much better than the RP50. The PODxt and the PODxt Live have tons of stuff and you can definetly use more than one effect at a time.

Good string here. I don't have a lot of experience w/ effects. I have a couple of cheap Danelectro effect pedals - Reverb, tremolo, chorus and a couple other cheap distortion pedals. I can't exactly figure out the best way to arrange these pedals to maximize some of the effects. Not to mention there are a seemingly endless number of other effects out there that I haven't figured out yet...phlanger, compressor, overdrive, pitch shifter, etc.. I've been just starting to look in to a multi-effect pedal as an option. Besides, it seems like the better pedals are $50 to $100 each. I was looking that the various Digitech models and the Boss multi-effects as well but not the POD. Now that I got myself a new Strat and a Marshall 15-CDR amp I think I'm inclined to work on my playing ability and not so much on altering the sounds....but good to have some feedback on the multi-effect units out there. Is buying a used multi-effect pedal an option or not really. And I seemed to have read mixed reviews on the Digitechs.

hey ruge, nothing wrong with going used at all you can save yourself some scratch, but always try a used effects unit out first if possible. also on a side note as far working on playing ability and technique i think your tone should figure into it.

As far as digitech goes I owned a GNX2 for a while and it definetly worked for what i wanted it for, but i found the PODxt sounded better and gave the option of using some high end amp tones with out having to soend 1000's of dollars on 1 amp i get 40+ models(metalshop pack). But with an amp modeler you really want to bypass the pre-amp section of your amp to get it sounding right, too much pre-amp can be a bad thing.

If your going to use a POD go with the PODxt Live. I've been using one for about a year now and just love this thing as a multi effects unit. Plus, if your doing any recording (which I do) you have all the amp sims and such to get the sounds you want.

The PODxt Live is about $100 dollars more than the Floor model, but it has one very big advantage. You can plug it in to your computer and program it on the computer instead of using the knobs and buttons on the unit. This doesn't sound like a big deal but, I find it much easier using the Gearbox software with it's pull down menus etc. to find and use exactly what I'm looking for.

I haven't tried the POD Floor model, but I would think that both of them (and the POD 2.0) all sound very similar to each other. So ease of use is a very big factor for me.

Later,
Fred

I am the proud owner of a Line 6 Flextone XL 2x12 - featured in my vids. It is an amp, not a multi-effects unit, but I wanted to add to Fredz post by saying that midi control over the entire amplifier and its patches, drag and drop files, etc. from the computer makes it a real dream to work with. I personally am mostly satisfied with the effects, though I dont use much. Mostly to just get a good tone. The effects on the Flextone are exactly the same as the PodXT series, if I am correct.

But, since each person has their own preferences, you must try them on your own, so have fun testing!

Well im not too familiar with all the multi effects pedals like the GNX1, 2, 3 and 4 or the pod ones...all I can say is that I have use 2 things The Rocktron Intellifex which was cool because it had like a bunch of stuff on it that also came with a noise gate suppresion kinda like the Hush built into it so it drowned out whatever feedback or hums that I had but unfortunatly it resigened and since they are disscontinued they only place you can get it is off of ebay...and the other which I currently use is the Alesis Quadraverb 2 which is cool because it has like 200 effects or something like that and you can also plug it to the computer and go to Alesis' website and download more effects onto it and presets and then you can mod them however you see fit on the Quadraverb...pretty niffty little thing...the only thing is they aren't pedals or anything its rackmount...hope that helps

I wouldn't recommend the POD 2.0 for gigging. There is a lot of nasty midrange frequencies that muddy things up really well. It has nothing to do with how you dial it in, or what gear you use with it - it's always muddy when you get loud. It's mediocre if you use an extra EQ with it and are meticulous about setting it up well.

In case anyone is interested I have ran the POD direct through a PA, with a solidstate and tube power amp and cab, through various amps (often bypassing the preamp through the effects loop), and acoustic amps.

It's a fantastic home tool, though. I essentially use it as a practice amp though my computer.

What do you intend to run your floorboard through?
