Ok, no misconceptions here, we are a shameless cover band, and apparently for a different reason than normal - fun. Everywhere I've been reading says its usually about the $$$. Sure thats nice, but only for more gear. At 40+ and married with jobs and kids, we aren't doing this to pay the bills.

I haven't posted in a while, and was wondering what my good friends at g.com thought about our choice of songs. So, go ahead, tear it up. Now, again, our MO is having fun, and the goal for that is to get invited back to A rooms in our area. I listed the artist that reflects the version closest that we do.

Anyway you want it - Journey
Come Together - Aerosmith
Simple Man - Shinedown
Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Roxanne - The Police
Keep Your Hands to yourself - G. Satellites
Man In The Box - Alice in Chains
Surrender - Cheap Trick
Show Me How to Live - Audioslave
Saturday Night's Alright - Nickelback
She Hates Me - Puddle of Mudd
Your Love - The Outfield
Kryptonite - Three doors down
My Kinda Lover - Billy Squier
Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Stone In Love - Journey
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Leader of Men - Nickelback
Fight For Your Right to Party - Beastie Boys
Fly From The Inside - Shinedown
You Shook Me all night long - AC/DC
Like A Stone - Audioslave
Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh
Cocaine - Eric Clapton
Cold Hard Bitch - Jet
Mississippi Queen - Mountain
The Ocean - Led Zeppelin
Save Me - Shinedown
Sober - Tool
Slither - Velvet Revolver

Thanks in advance for your input. Let it rip!

Chris,

It's a great list of songs. I take it that your looking for some really good bar songs? I would add Disturbed's "Down with the sickness" if you think you can pull the rant part of the song off in a bar. That may be hard to do. Cream's "Badge" or "Crossroads" might be something to consider.

Not sure how other people feel, but I would swap out "you shook me all night long" and replace it with either "back in black" or "it's a long way to the top...".

Am I the only AC/DC fan that is sick of "you shook me"?

Some good stuff there...other things that I wouldn't expect in a good bar set...

Here are some easy standards that are always good:

Once Bitten Twice Shy (Great White)
Heart of Rock & Roll (Huey Lewis)
Old time rock & Roll (Bob Seager)
Crossroads (Cream version, I'll second that...great showoff tune)
No sleep till brooklyn (nother good beastie from the day)
Free Bird (Skynard/ no bar band should arrive without it cause you know whats gonna happen)
Raw Hide (Not sure...but it worked for the blues brothers and always gets a laugh)
Paint it Black (Rolling Stones)
Mony Mony (Billy Idol....do I hear cradle of love too)....

Man my age is really showin....

One that I always thought would be really cool is "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. Since I'm sure you guys don't yodel, or play a flute, you might take a look at Gary Hoey's version..

Sacrilege! "Simple Man" is *not* a Shinedown song! :-P

I assume that means you're going to do an acoustic version of it like theirs? I like both versions quite a bit.

I was hesitant to post this topic in the "Electric Guitar" forum, but alas, there is no "Performance" forum. But am I happily surprised to find great responses - with songs no less. Maybe I shouldnt be surprised. Thanks all!!!

Disturbed, great idea. But, I wonder if they are carrying the needed popularity for bar songs.

"You Shook Me" - yes, tired as a 40 year old douchebag... but REQUIRED for bar bands. We're playing a geezer fest this weekend, and EVERYONE - even the old skool geezers dance to that song. Besides, I FINALLY got the solo (almost) nailed.

sallan, GREAT suggestions. We are always struggling to find songs that are fun enough for us and popular enough to float by the crowds. "Leader of Men" is fun, but not getting much airplay on the radio, so it may have to take a hike for one of yours. Someone actaully did say Huey, with your +1, it goes in the list.

"Hoscus Pocus" - guitar geek song. Some may know it, but I fear not enough. Love me some Hoey though.

"Simple Man", yeah, I know. But, I did say that I posted the artist that we do the closest version of. I linked to a Shinedown version, which when I saw it live, was our inspiration for covering the song.

Thanks again, all!

Thanks!

Uh, right now, that is our set list and order for a full night. We currently end with Slither. Kinda weird having Sober just before the last song, but I do that because both songs are drop D and Im trying to reduce guitar tunings/changes. Also, depending on the venue/crowd/mood, we change it up.

pretty nice song list....not too sure about any way you want it. even though i love that song...,when my band plays it ...it just kind of sits there. not much crowd response to it. which is a bummer. so we dropped it. and if they want to hear stairway or freebird, it's a hundred dollars extra(lol)....keeping some current songs in the list helps too. drowning pool "let the bodies hit the floor" is always a huge winner, matchbox 20 songs seem to work well. tom petty and john cougar song tend to do very well. just about anything they can dnace to is a winner. funky music provides lots of solo time and keeps the bodies on the floor....you might want to add some more slow songs in there. turn the page and wonderful tonight.....the slow songs will get ya into the animal clubs(eagle,moose,etc.). and they all pay rather well...and it gives the guys a chance to dance with the chickies....

Dig. Thanks for the suggestions. Funky music was tried, but kyboshed by our singer. If he didnt have killer pipes, we might overrule him. Screaming tunes like Bodies are usually frowned on by our singer.

Thanks again, C

Definitely like that list. It would be a crowd pleaser for everyone I believe. Most modern cover bands are okay, but they don't include the 60s and 70s like you guys are. Hell, you even included a Billy Squire song. Now there is an underrated player. There's always Road House Blues, or Smooth by Santana & Rob Thomas. Is Momma Don't Dance too old? I always liked hearing different versions of that one.

My guitar teacher used to play "Play That Funky Music" and the vocalist changed the lyrics to "play that fuckin' music, white boy"...bwahaha.

Nice list, by the way.

Thanks frumsapap. Nah, nothins' too old.

Thanks Triste, like the idea of changing the words, and our singer loves to cuss, so maybe that'll work.

Basically, after all of us have been in some specialty band or another, most self-indulgent failures, we decided we wanted to have fun and NOT CHANGE BANDS ANYMORE. We decided that would require playing the game - in order to book, and get re-invited, you have to play to the crowd, not yourself. So we listed all the songs we knew, and looked up their "Popularity" on iTunes or chart position. Yeah, its totally pop, but we ARE getting rebooked at bars. In a
