I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2002 and it is just started to cause problems with my left hand. I have lost strength in my thumb and pinky finger. but I am still playing and I have a gig tomorrow night. I am not posting this to get sympathy or pity but to try to get young guitarists to appreciate their talent. My early days of playing went by in a haze because I was drunk or stoned or trying to get laid. Now that I only have a few months of playing left, I appreciate it so much more. Nothing beats the feeling if being in a smoke filled honky tonk and playing Gimme 3 Steps in front of a packed dance floor. Or being in a blues club and seeing the faces of the crowd while playing The Sky is Crying. What I am trying to say here is to appreciate your talent and dont take it for granted. Play every show as if it was tour last.

Wow, thats very sad, Johhny. Thanks for sharing that with us. Ive been playing much more in the past 1.5 years, getting back into bands and gigging, now that my kids are getting older. I guess we guitarists never seem to get to play "enough" and in your case, that is the plain truth. We play Cold Shot, and I think you'll be on my mind the next time we do.

Have a blast at your show tomorrow! Cheers!

I am at a loss for words. I hope your show goes well and that all of the notes you play from today forward you remember with great affection.

Shit. That makes me think. I really shouldn't take guitar for granted, play it in all forms, and gig like there's no fuckin tommorrow. Thanks man.

Hats off to you, brother. You said it best. And here's to you having a killer show tonight. Go out and destroy 'em!

I do play every show like it may be my last. Its not to be pessimistic, but I want to know that my last note coming out of house PA was played with full emotion. Life is short. You have to milk all you can out of it.

I guess there is nothing I can say here. Except that what you said was enough to make me (a young guitarist) appreciate that little talent I've got and that it will be a great motivation for my playing from now on.
I'm completely ignorant in what regards diseases and medicine in general, but I hope you will have a possibility to keep playing. If not, savor and enjoy it all as long as you can.
Thank you so much for your words, Johnny.

First of all, I can totally sympathize. (Is that spelled right?) I had an industrial accident last year where my hand got kinda messed up. Nothing bloody, but the usual tendon and muscle damage. As a result the fingers on my left hand don't curl, and I have zippo for feeling in fingers 3 and 4. It makes for lotsa owies that i don't know where they came from, and I had to relearn how to play, with a new, "sloppy" messy sort of style... It's why my stuff sounds so bad, lol! But as far as taking playing for granted, I know I did, and it sucked when I couldn't play for a bit... Kudos to Johnny for working through such a challenge.

Johnny, I don't know why I did this, but I accidentally -1'ed you. It won't let me take it back, but mark my words, I'll make it up to ya... I swear that I was trying to +1 ya...(Damn fingers...)
