im going to get this guitar and have it professionally routed for a floyd rose pro. my question is, is the action on the frets going to be too low? how can this be done without any buzz or notes choking? can a professional be able to do this?

why not just raise the bridge posts?

Yup, You can set the height of a floyd bridge within a reasonable range. you won't have issues.

Have you found yet a luthier willing to undertake the project? I support every ambitious project, but the conversion of fixed bridges to floyds is the one thing I advise against every time, because it involves plenty of routing (top and back) and I don't think it is worth it getting into that much trouble...
Better start from scratch with a custom body and spare parts.

Sorry to intrude here. Still trying to get this thing to work. I'm finally able to post, but can't see my replies. Testing edit functions as well because they don't appear to work for me either. If I could make a new post, I wouldn't mess this one up for testing, but I can't make a new post either.

Hey! It's better than the past two weeks when I couldn't post at all!

OK... No edit or spell check functions either. Thanks for allowing me to intrude.

Noooo... Don't do it, man. A Floyd is cool, but I think you'll be happier if you just pick up an Ibanz or something... Leave the PRS alone!

The problem with what you propose is that the neck angle on the TSE is wrong for a trem. Since the Tremonti has a stoptail, the neck angle pitches back a few degrees more than on a trem-equipped guitar. To keep the strings off the frets (literally), the bridge would have to be way above the top of the guitar. It'll look weird and probably won't work so great, either. IMO, you'll be paying a load of money for something that's unlikely to satisfy.

Shimming the neck into the proper angle is a minor issue compared to drilling a third of the guitar's mass away in order to create the cavities needed for a trem.

Not on a set neck guitar like the Tremonti SE. Especially when the neck has a long tenon.

That's not to say that routing for the trem isn't MAJOR surgery but I'd say it's easier than removing the neck and resetting it.

I agree with IBZ and Alec; The benefits just aren't worth it to me; I'd never do it. I'd rather use that cash on a guitar that's been designed for that style of trem.
BUT, if that's the guitar you MUST have equipped with a Floyd, then by all means...

I think routing out a prs (even if it is a tremontis se) would be a mistake. I would take the money you would have to pay a professional and put it towards a guitar designed for a floyd. it NEVER hurts to have too many guitars and a big variety!!

i'm with everyone else on this one....waaay too money for a risky job....much,much easier to simply buy a floyd equipped guitar. schecter has a nice one out now(damien FR). for about $400.....you;ll likely spend that on this routing job alone.........

I didn't think of the set-neck possibility. I'm used to thinking in terms of bolt joints...

If you want a floyd rose equipped guitar, go for something else. Equipping that guitar with a floyd will probably change anything you like about it in terms of playability, etc.

Theres about a 50/50 chance of it either being a really really kick ass guitar, or turning out shit.

Are you willing to take that chance?
