I've been finding more and more time to try to hash out tones and such that I like. Being able to finally record is a big bonus as well. Here's a song that demonstrates my favorite rhythm settings for recording:

4 guitars ;)
Guitar 1: Left channel, Keeley DS-1, Tone = 10 o'clock, Level = 10 o'clock, Dist = maxed, Seeing Eye mode
Guitar 2: Right channel, Keeley MT-2, Level = 3 o'clock, High = noon, Low = 1 o'clock, mid = 11 o'clock, mid freq = 11 o'clock, gain = maxed, Triple Diode mode
Guitar 3: Left chanel, Keeley MT-2
Guitar 4: Right channel, Keeley DS-1

All through an old Korg Pandora PXR4 pocket recorder. I did this one on the road, so no amps or speakers or such. I hope to remedy that situation when I get home ;)

I know the levels are way off. I didn't even try a proper mixdown. Sorry.

Anyway here it is....be brutal!!

For me, the voices seemed to be a little off. But otherwise its great. It'd be fun to solo over.

Feel free to loop it, copy it, do whatever you want to with it. I've already got my final ideas laid out so I'm squared away with it.

That was pretty awesome - definite southern metal vibe going on, and the tone was heavy yet clear. I can't wait to hear a completed song out of that.

The vocal stuff was a bit pitchy, but passable... I love the 'idea' you're going for here Shane. Killah vibe...

The tone... My God did that sound good. I LOVE the sound you got, man! It really reinforces my belief in the power of 'the pedal'.
That's a Keely modded Metalzone and DS1, eh? Direct in? That's even better, dude... Awesome, man.

Yeah it's just the pedals into a clean amp / v30 4x12 emulation on the pxr4. I'm going to re-track it all now that i have the basic idea of where i want to go with this. Tone-wise I was picturing Alex Lifeson, if he were born in 1984.

The solo parts will be the DS-1 being pushed hard by a keeley TS-9 mod plus ;) Another tone I'm kind of proud of.

I apologize for the vocals being so off...I recorded them all in one take and no warm-ups or anything.

Awesome fat guitar sound, basic power riffage, I love it! I'm impatient to listen to what you're gonna make out of it.

In time...I don't want to spit out any crap-ola tracks to you guys (this one being an exception...along with everything else i post here :-P). Honestly, I want to get my bass guitar lined up, along with some proper vocal mics and a recording that doesn't involve any of that nasty 60hz hum. I know how to fix these problems, it's just an issue of time vs. money right now.

I promise I won't leave this one on the table. I still have that Carmina Burana idea stewing around but it just got to a point in the track where I feel I can go no further than it is now. At least without proper bass, drums, keys, etc etc.

A few notes behind it, for those who care:

I noticed right away when I got my pedals from Keeley that the DS-1 has a very thick midrange tone and the MT-2, of course, gets a deep scooped metal tone. I like both sounds and was trying to decide on which one to use for the rhythm parts. I ended up recording 2 tracks of each, panned hard left and right, and while I was comparing them i accidentally played them at the same time. The result was what you hear. I think the sound is very full-range compared to what either pedal can do alone. I also think it's a keeper :)

the only thing I would like to do differently is run it through my amp / speakers and see how much different the result is. I imagine some knob-turning will be necessary to achieve the same result, but running these pedals through a proper set of tubes will probably bring them to some serious life. I'd also like to try recording it with a semi-hollow guitar, like an ES335. I think Alex Lifeson has one of the coolest tones ever and the 335 seems to be key in getting that thickness that he's known for. Maybe one day down the road.

Again, this will be months in the making but i will keep you guys posted on what's going down with it. In the meantime, I'll be able to do jams for real now, and maybe even record some covers using my settings just to see how they turn out. Like I said...Alex Lifeson fan, so expect some Rush wherever possible :-P
