I just want to know how much you fiddle about with your tone while you play...

You know... There are various levels of this
- leaving everything in a fixed place
- playing with the volume knob (from switching off when you don't play to constantly affecting your output)
- playing with the pickup switch (from switching between songs or riffs all the way to switching all the time during a solo, ala Blackmore)
- stomping on FX (from just stomping on a boost to switching between patches for every riff)
- tweaking the amp...
- retuning on the fly...

So where are you on this subject?

When I (try to) recreate songs I try to recreate the sounds too so I'm flicking switches as necessary. But with my own stuff I'm pretty simplistic. I just change pickups between rythm and solo or stomp on the boost and that's about it. My setup is such that it helps me take the simplistic route.

I think you have a good point about the simplistic approach until recently I used a tc-electronics g major and a midi foot controler, I used it live twice and decided to sell it on ebay because I was constantly messing whith it at home but could do little without the nasa midi manual from EMC2 in a live situation. im now totaly stomp box because being a guitarist I prefer analogue controls. you can fiddle with them till the cows come home going into some hightech peramater presses during a live set would be impossible I also think that if you switch pups during songs its going to add veriation in a live situation. thats just my opinion because when you dont have time to think you wont.

Right now I have a Digitech RP80 running into a Fender FM 212R...I set my EQ on the amp and pretty much leave it alone, and I only have about 3 patches on the Digitech that I use. (clean, rhythm, lead). I don't do too much screwing around with that sort of thing. I don't even switch pickups too much on the old Strat...I like the humbucker. The only changes I'll make on the fly are tuning...from standard to drop d or vice versa. And that will probably change once I install a Floyd. Guess I'll have to invest in one of those EVH D-Tuna thingies or something.

I usually leave everything at one setting and use the volume knob / pickup selector to change things up as needed.

My favorite is to set the amp to sound good on both clean and dirty channels, and then push it just a hair with a pedal. Then, I can ride the volume knob to control breakup.

As far as other effects, I *might* switch in a delay, reverb, or a touch of chorus, but other than that I don't use much.

With tuning, I try to have one guitar for each tuning I use, which is usually only 2. I play in D standard or drop C (not because I'm trying to be all nu-metal with dropped tunings, but because it's easier to play, it hits harder on the heavy stuff, and it matches my vocal range better.)

Lessee...

...the TU-2 tuner pedal gets used between most songs...

...the Bud-Wah gets used about every 3 songs...

...the EQ pedal gets set up for the stage volume (I use it in the loop as a "lead" punch) and maybe a tiny bit of fiddling...pre-show. Just turned on and off after the show starts.

...RV-3 is on the whole time, no adjustments...

...chorus and flange pedals used sparingly, and they're pretty much set.

The guitars? Pickup switching common in most songs, tone knob adjustments relatively rare unless the room's acoustics really throw me a curve.

The amp gets set and usually left alone pre-show.

I try to keep fiddling rare and/or quick, as the audience isn't there to watch me wrestle with my gear.
