Okay wtf mate? Are you ALL insane soloists? Or do any of you prefer gnarly assed mind killing rythm licks. I play rhythm better than lead due to the fact that I learned what I know with a drummer. I believe it's not just the soloing that makes great music; it is the collaboration or rythm, beat, and soloing. Really, the rythm is the backbone of rock, and without it you would have all random ass soloing, which can be cool as fuck, but gets old real quick...

So what do you prefer and how do you play it? What is your theory on the rhythm side of guitar?

I'm more of a rhythm player. Soloing is great and all, but I'm more into a good solid rhythm whether it's metal, funk, etc.

And my apologies to you Mike D, my laptop is a little touchy and I gave you a -1 when I wanted to give you a +1, I'll make it up to you.

shred is dead. I'm mainly a rhythm player, if and when i do any leady stuff i usually sit down and write something that fits over the root notes and it generally gets played the same way. While i do like to hear some screamin solos in tunes, I don't like the tune to be overloaded with em. I think a tune that can make me rock to the rhythm is better, than a 5000 note shred fest solo filled brain melter anyday.

Shredding is great for other guitarists to listen too. But, if you want to make people's feet move, you got to have rhythm and groove! And good rhythm guitarists are harder to find.

I like to shred, but to me the meat of a song is the rhythm section.

The drums have to be spot-on and if you have a virtuosic drummer then you're even better (i.e. Rush or Dream Theater.)

Your bassist has to know the right notes to play and has to put the sound down exactly on the beat (or some sub-section of the beat, but still very precisely). His / her tone can't be muddy, and it can't be too bright.

Rhythm guitar fills out the middle. It's what makes the song. I prefer single-string riffage 80% of the time as opposed to moving power chords. I think a good, hard-hitting riff is more powerful than a line that's nothing but G-C-D power chords over and over. Of course there are boundaries, but generally this is true. Again, the rhythm guitarist has to be spot on. His notes can't run into each other, they have to be clearly defined, ESPECIALLY when it's the same note twice in a row. His tone should be thick and brutal but should complement the lead tone without getting in the way.

I like to that I do both equally well (which means I'm not a master of either :-p)

What about bands like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, or Queens Of The Stone Age? Jimi Hendrix? Van Halen? Jane's Addiction?

Not defined, a bit of a mess, yet it sounds awesome; (Well, people seem to buy their records, anyways...)
I personally don't think anything has to be "one way". There really aren't any rules, just people's tastes, am I right?
I mean take my stuff... 300 people will watch/listen to it, at least 20 of 'em have something to say about it... I personally think that they're just expressing what THEY would have don differently if they could do it themselves. If they COULD do it, then they would, and then they'd go through the same thing.

It's all good, interesting as hell... +1 webcred to all!

well I did say I like to shred out whenever I get the chance. Not that I'm that good at it, I just like to do it.

This could be a far worse topic, for sure...remember all those "Speed vs Emotion" discussions? ugh.
