His name is Fernando Miyata and he is a gutiarist from brazil. He is awesome too. Vai should sign him to his label.

"Fernando Miyata was born in Brazil. He started to play viola and guitar at the age of 12, back in 1990. He was influenced by rock music by bands like Kiss and Guns n' Roses.

His interest in music carried him onto music school studying viola and starting to learn guitar. Fernando started playing in a cover band at the same time playing songs by bands like the Ramones, Guns n' Roses, Black Sabbath, amongst others.

During his studies it became clear that Fernando would be a talent and he was advised by his teacher to look for lessons in São Paulo with the instructor Sherlock Gomes with whom he studied for 3 years. He continued to study classical viola as well as guitar.

In 1994, Fernando started to study guitar with Mozart Mello in the Conservatory Souza Lima, with whom he studied for a year. In 1996, he started to study classical viola in ULM. In ULM, he participated in an a violin orchestra. Eventually he changed from Viola to guitar, studying with Marcelo Munari and professor Pollaco improving his improvisation skills.

Fernando started playing piano and drums in 2000 and devoting time to develop his own guitar style. Fernando is now a teacher himself and has taught more than 500 pupils."

Yeah he's a great player. Highly skilled. I've seen a bunch of his youtube vids.

Personally, I feel like his songs are sort of bland and lack direction. They are by no means bad or terrible though. I think he would really shine as a soloist within a band (or maybe just under the guidance of a great producer). It would probably be scary-good.

Thanks guys! That's really informative - gonna check him out. What's interesting is all the dudes that call him just a fast Shredder (I checked out some of his stuff on YouTube too). But this ain't just any old rambling crap like I play! This is on a different planet - like Vai but with some Gilmour finesse in there too!

I been playing 30 years and I have never seen anything like it. And if I had 200 years to practise I couldn't do that.

Sorry, but I think that sort of Malmstein / Vai crap is boring. Anyone can learn to play a million notes in rapid succession, but learning to play a tasteful, melodic solo takes alot more effort. Sure, it's technically great, but it's not musical and that, to me, is the point. Granted, that genre is not my favorite by any stretch of the imagination, but I like a loud nasty guitar solo from time to time. I just prefer it to musically imaginative more so than technically so. Might as well program a computer to play it.

I think lumping Vai into the same category is rather uninformed. While Vai does have technical ability, his depth of expression and colour are amazing. Not only are they amazing they are clearly his focus. He's one of the most creative minds in music. That said, I don't like all of his music. Personally some of his flagship tunes leave me dry (for the love of god :S:S:S).

I can understand your perspective on Malmsteen as well. That's a fair opinion. Some people might dig a flurry of notes, but it's not for me either.

Also, I think a careful ear would discern that the brazillian guitarist above creates some interesting textures, harmonically. He does spend most of his time trying to dazzle us with speed, but I would imagine that the purpose of this video is simply a 'show off video.' Most you tube videos are. I have one, and it's a style i perform less than 10% of the time. I'm sure he would be able to play very tastefully in a real/professional environment.

Also I think you're bang on here:

"I just prefer it to musically imaginative more so than technically so. Might as well program a computer to play it."

EDIT:

WOW. this is a weird forum layout. when you reply to a post it goes directly beneath :S:S:S

Yes, my opinion on Vai is uninformed insomuch as I can't seem to get beyond the flash. If I don't get a hook to hang on to, I move on to the next one. There's too much music to discover to dick around hoping that a technically brilliant guitarist releases something melodically engaging. I am of the opinion that if you can't say it in 4 bars, then 12 more ain't gonna help. Guitar solos are generally boring. Get in and get out. If it doesn't ornament the tune, then it doesn't belong. It's like having an giant, ornate frame around a small, plain painting. It's distracting.

This is a great forum. I love hearing what other guitarists think.

After reading jcuempire's post it reminded me of a kid I saw on YouTube who I think is possibly the greatest guitar player I've ever seen, especially at the age of 16. (NO, it's NOT funtwo!) This kid plays incredibly plays most genre's and he just seems to play so effortlessly. Thought I'd share some of his styles. The embedded video is his own composition.

Mattrach (remember he's only 16!)

Wow, now that kid has chops. Serious chops. That's more what I am on about. It's less "hey, look at what I can do" and more "Look at what I do within this tune". It's a world of difference. Very cool. I hate the little punk. Just kidding
