Has anybody ever played a Travis Bean? I would imagine the guitar would be neck heavy. I was wondering what caused them to go out of business, and if they offered something other guitars didn't.

Looks interesting. Has a hand-made look, like its made from a solid chunk of wood

It also has an aluminum neck, supposedly for better sustain.

My brother-in-law's father has a custom made all-aluminum guitar. He said some company in Germany made it for him. I need to play it sometime and let you guys know. I've seen it but I haven't played it.

My partner in crime owned one for a long time a 1000A.. Not really neck heavy although when it was freezing out side that damn neck was COLD....

The partnership broke up and that's the way it goes...

Yeah I knew the Travis Beam had an aluminum neck but I haven't seen one in years although last week while on vacation I did tour the Martin factory and notice that they had some aluminum tops on a few guitars and in one beautiful case they had one with aluminum binding.

I never owned the Travis Bean, but around the same time period Kramer had a guitar with an aluminum neck. Nice guitar, not neck heavy, but also not what I wanted at the time... I traded it for a Les Paul Special.

The Kramer neck was forged to allow room for 2 wood insets that ran the length of the neck to the aluminum headstock.

I think Kramer had something to do with thier demise, I remember they had a copy of the travis bean years ago, I did play one once strange but very cool. I like the split headstock, super guitar.

There were a lot of experimental guitars back in the 70's and early 80's. The ten string B.C. Rich "Bitch" was another.

Tim Mahoney, from 311 plays one on the last album they made. Sounds kind of like the Paul Reed Smith Santana, with a twinge of Fender Strat. Atleast on the album it does.

Actually I think he owns both, but it's the Travis Bean on the last album.

I have always wanted to play a Travis Bean too. The headstock looks cool as fuck. I want to know what they feel like and how they sound. One of my guitar heros, Lee Ranaldo, plays a few, which is where my interest in them comes from.

The gear page on 311.com does not show it anymore, but it was on there for a long time, and they would tell you what guitars they used for what. And it's not a BC Rich that he plays, but a Schecter, and a Gibson Exporer. Of course his infamous Paul Reed Smith guitars as well.
