So, I was just practicing with my band, and we were taking a break. So I had my Dunlop Jazz III (black) in my mouth so my hands would be free to set down my guitar. And I coughed, and swallowed my pick...

I bet allot of guitar players swallow their picks on accident. I'm hold my pick in my teeth allot. I'm surprised I've never swallowed one.

We need a government study to determine the risk of picks on guitarist and other innocent bystanders.

Coughing/sneezing scares me when I got a pick pinched between my lips (the picks never go in the mouth completely). You know, the part where you have to draw air first in order to sneeze, I always fear I'm going to inhale my pick... So far I've been lucky.

Lately I'm using a small 2mm pick, it's like a big pill so it should go down easily. I think the regular shape and size picks with thickness below 2mm are dangerous in that they both big and have considerably sharp edges that could injure your throat... The other pick I sometimes chew on is a 3mm Tri ... That would be a nasty one to swallow but I hope it's heavy enough to fall out of my mouth instead of in it should my lips loosen grip (in order to cough)...

Found this forum thread searching google. I actually laughed a few times reading it. Some guy couldn't find his pick and was sure he had swallowed it. Some of the advice that he got from the forum community was just rediculous.

I never put it in my mouth.
I put it behind my ear (like a pencil), it doesnt fall because it is stuck between hair and ear ;)

Hmmm... Guess you have to have hair for that to work!

I use .38mm Dunlops. I have a pick holder on the neck of my guitar. They're just too thin to put in your mouth. Not that you can't, but because they're thin, they could actually cause a bit of damage traveling through your digestive tract. Not worth the risk. Especially knowing one guy who almost died because a swallowed pick blocked his intestines.

My son swallowed a stack of coins once. Couple of quarters, nickles, and dimes. He swallowed them all at once. I never understood how he could accidently do this. He cant even swallow an asprin on purpose. When he did it he totally freaked out. He was so scared that he even puked and everything but the coins didn't come back. We called the doc who said to bring him in just to ensure that they had made it down to his stomach. The x-rays confirmed that he had in fact swallowed all the coins and they were still neatly stacked just the way he had them positioned before he swallowed them. After about two weeks we had his stomach x-rayed again and the coins were all seperated and located in various locations around his gut. After another two weeks or so we x-rayed again and all the coins were gone.

Pretty crazy.

Don't put stuff in your mouth.

Guitar picks are the number one thing a GUITAR PLAYER can choke on. This wouldn't apply to everyone.

Take the gay pron star. His number one thing to choke on is completely different!
