I got a few new kids on guitar that brought in first acts. I never messed with one before this week, but i tried tuning one. that was one horrid experience. chords just didn't sound anywhere near tolerant no matter what.

I told both parents to ask around and keep ears out for people with a used guitar. I recommended a used squire since electrics are a little easier on the fingers for 3rd graders, and if they're 2nd hand, they've gotta be dirt cheap on ebay or something.

any others? possibly a bit smaller than a regular guitar, not as small as a little first act, that are decent?

yea, squiers are good. yamaha makes a beginner guitar that's around $150 that is pretty nice as well.

oh, and kinda half-kidding... i've seen baby V guitars at GC. but they're more than the strat packs, usually haha.

I beat the piss out of an old mid 80's bc rich warlock, when i picked up the guitar for the second time in my lfe, played that thing for a while before i bought a better axe, saddly i miss that guitar....

When some friends of mine ask me what they should get thier kid for a first guitar i usually tend to tell them to be prepared to spend a little cash. I tell them to look used and get something better than a new cheap guitar, cause the kid won't out grow the guitar if he picks it up fast , andit'll be easier to learn on a better instrument. My first guitar was a Sears Harmony strat style, god awful guitar, and a sear amp with no overdrive, and between that and no one to play with ar learn from up in the sticks of VT I lost interest, so i also tell em theres more that contributes to playing than just the instrument.

Yamaha Pacifica PAC112M. Fantastic guitars. You can get them new for around 200, I got both of mine used for 100 each. Action can be set really low without any buzz.

Ill second the Pacifica for new, 2nd hand Strat (or anything with better tuners and bridge). You will lose more money on a new cheap guitar than a used mid grade piece if you decide to sell.

I think how well a guitar stays in tune is directly related to how well its made. Tuners, bridge, neck, wood, etc, etc. Intonation screws need to be solid, if you want to play any chords and sound in-tune.

I also second what inablackout says about gear. If it doesnt sound good enough to the player to keep interest, the effort is lost. Its obviously a balance between budget and quality.
